For Michigan fans who cheered J.J. McCarthy through a national championship run, the latest buzz out of Minnesota feels personal.
The former Wolverines quarterback, drafted 10th overall by the Vikings in 2024, is once again the subject of trade speculation as the NFL approaches its 53-man roster cuts.
Kyler Murray has locked in the starting job in Minnesota, and McCarthy’s preseason work has done little to quiet the noise. He has struggled to connect consistently, including misses on open receivers in a recent game against the Baltimore Ravens.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler addressed the situation on SportsCenter.
“Is he QB2 in Minnesota or is he QB3? Because they do have Carson Wentz,” Fowler said. “So could the Minnesota Vikings field a few trade calls? A lot could happen. They have to decide what is McCarthy’s role on the team.”
Around Ann Arbor and across the Big Ten footprint, that quote hits differently. McCarthy was the steady hand who helped deliver Michigan its first national title in more than two decades. His poise in the pocket and leadership in big moments made him a favorite in maize and blue.
Now the conversation has shifted to whether the Vikings might move on from him after fewer than two full seasons. NFL legend Shannon Sharpe did not hold back.
“I’m trading him [McCarthy] if I can,” Sharpe said. “I trust Carson Wentz more than I trust him.”
Michigan supporters still see the same arm talent and competitiveness that showed up on Saturdays in the Big House. Many hope a fresh start elsewhere could help the 23-year-old recapture that form.
Teams looking for quarterback depth or a developmental piece have been mentioned as possible landing spots. The Philadelphia Eagles have shown interest in similar situations before, taking a chance on Kenny Pickett and later flipping him for draft capital.
Others point to recent success stories of quarterbacks who struggled early only to revive their careers with new teams — Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Daniel Jones and Geno Smith among them. For Wolverines fans, those examples offer a measure of optimism.
Any trade would likely bring only modest compensation, perhaps a late-round pick such as a sixth-round selection. That return would stand in sharp contrast to the high draft capital Minnesota spent to acquire the former Michigan star.
Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell once said that “organizations fail young quarterbacks before young quarterbacks fail organizations.” Trading McCarthy for relatively little after a short sample size could test that philosophy.
Murray’s own injury history raises questions about Minnesota’s depth chart. If the starter goes down, the Vikings would have to decide whether they trust Wentz more than the player they once viewed as their long-term answer.
From the Michigan perspective, many fans would rather see McCarthy get meaningful opportunities somewhere else than sit as a distant third option. His college career proved he can elevate a team when given the chance.
Keeping him in Minnesota for another year might still hold more value for the Vikings than a late-round pick. Yet the growing talk suggests the organization is at least weighing its options as roster decisions near.
Michigan alumni and supporters will keep a close eye on the situation. For a program that takes pride in its recent success, the next chapter for one of its former stars remains a point of genuine interest across the state.
Whether McCarthy stays put or lands with a new team, Wolverines fans are hoping the next step brings the kind of consistency they remember from his time in Ann Arbor.
