The New England Patriots are turning once more to a familiar face in the backfield, bringing back running back JaMycal Hasty on a one-year contract after he worked out with the team Wednesday.
According to NFL insider Arye Pulli, the deal came together quickly following the tryout. Hasty is expected to suit up Thursday night when the Patriots open their preseason schedule against the Indianapolis Colts.
This marks another chapter for Hasty in New England. He has spent portions of the past three offseasons with the organization and already knows the system and several teammates.
The move also continued a busy day of roster activity at the position. Earlier Wednesday, the Patriots signed veteran running back Hassan Haskins and waived-injured rookie Myles Montgomery.
Hasty becomes the second experienced back added in a single day as the team looks to strengthen depth behind its top options.
At 29 years old, Hasty offers versatility on offense and special teams. That skill set could help him compete for a role among the group fighting for the remaining spots on the roster.
Hasty first joined the Patriots in November 2023 when the team claimed him off waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars. He saw limited action that year but earned a larger opportunity the following season.
In 2024, he appeared in 15 games and finished with 20 carries for 69 yards. He also caught 10 passes for 59 yards and one touchdown while returning 10 kickoffs at an average of 23.8 yards.
His lone scoring play that year came on a 16-yard reception from quarterback Drake Maye during a game against Jacksonville at Wembley Stadium in London. Hasty made a defender miss before reaching the end zone on the play.
After becoming a free agent following the 2024 season, Hasty returned to New England during training camp in August 2025. The Patriots released him at the final roster cutdown, and the Miami Dolphins signed him to their practice squad two days later.
He stayed with Miami throughout the 2025 regular season but did not receive a standard elevation to the active roster. Hasty now returns to Foxborough with 56 regular-season games, 479 rushing yards and 375 receiving yards on his career résumé.
The addition of Hasty and Haskins reflects a sudden effort to reshape the lower end of the running back depth chart. Both players were among four backs the Patriots worked out Wednesday, along with Shane Watts and Leshon Williams.
Haskins brings his own experience, having played in 44 NFL games with significant special-teams contributions, including 28 career kickoff returns. Initial reports indicated only Haskins had been signed before word of Hasty’s agreement emerged later in the evening.
At the top of the depth chart, little has changed. Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson remain the primary options. The competition for the other jobs now includes Hasty, Haskins, Terrell Jennings, Lan Larison and Jam Miller.
Hasty’s prior time with the Patriots could ease the transition for such a rapid return. He is expected to be on the field against the Colts less than 24 hours after rejoining the team, giving coaches an early look at how he fits into the current group.
The move provides another chance for the veteran to contribute in a system he already understands while the Patriots continue evaluating their options ahead of the regular season.
