The Philadelphia Phillies continue to make noise ahead of the MLB trade deadline, and according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, another familiar face from the San Francisco Giants could be next on their shopping list.
Nightengale has reported that veteran left-hander Robbie Ray is on the Phillies’ radar, coming on the heels of the two clubs already completing a significant deal before Monday’s 6 p.m. cutoff.
That earlier transaction brought in second baseman Luis Arraez and relief pitcher Caleb Kilian adding both a high-contact bat and a reliable arm out of the bullpen. The Phillies clearly like what they see in the Giants’ system and front office, and the mutual comfort level appears to have opened the door for further discussions.
It should also be noted that the Phillies also swung a deal for New York Mets left-handed reliever Brooks Raley, so if they are able to net Ray as well, it would mark their third significant trade deadline move.
Ray, a former Cy Young winner who has battled inconsistency and injury in recent seasons, still possesses the kind of strikeout stuff that can change a rotation in October.
At this stage of his career, he is no longer the dominant force who once led the American League in strikeouts, yet he remains a serviceable mid-to-back-end starter who could provide innings and postseason experience, owning a 3.08 ERA and 1.288 WHIP this season.
For Philadelphia, the interest makes sense on several levels. The club has already demonstrated a willingness to spend prospect capital and absorb salary in pursuit of immediate contention.
Adding Ray would give manager Rob Thomson another left-handed option to mix and match against tough right-handed lineups, while also providing depth should any of the current starters falter down the stretch. The Phillies’ window remains open, but the calendar is unforgiving.
With the deadline approaching, every available upgrade is being weighed carefully.
Whether the Giants are prepared to part with Ray depends on their own evaluation of the season and the return they might receive. Nightengale’s report does not indicate that a deal is imminent, only that the Phillies have checked in and remain engaged.
Still, the fact that the two organizations have already completed one meaningful trade suggests the lines of communication are open and the groundwork has been laid.
For Phillies fans who have watched the club aggressively reshape its roster, the possibility of adding another veteran arm is both intriguing and consistent with the front office’s recent approach.
