The Detroit Tigers have completed a minor transaction that began more than two weeks earlier, finalizing the player-to-be-named-later portion of their deal that sent outfielder and designated hitter Jahmai Jones to the Boston Red Sox.
According to reporting from Red Sox insider Ari Alexander, the Tigers are receiving left-handed pitcher Jojo Ingrassia in return.
Ingrassia was selected in the 14th round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of Cal State Fullerton. Now in his second season at the High-A level with the Greenville Drive, the young left-hander has put together a solid body of work across 44 innings.
He carries a 3.27 ERA, a strikeout rate of 33 percent, and a walk rate of 12.2 percent. Looking at his broader minor-league résumé, Ingrassia has made 38 appearances, posting a 5-4 record and a cumulative 2.56 ERA.
The trade itself originated when the Tigers designated Jones for assignment on July 9. At the time, Detroit’s focus remained largely on the possibility of moving ace Tarik Skubal before the Aug. 3 trade deadline, yet the club continued to execute smaller moves along the way.
Jones, who had struggled to find consistent success early in the 2026 season, expressed genuine enthusiasm about joining the Red Sox, a team he followed closely while growing up.
“I was really excited [about the trade],” Jones said. “Obviously, I understand what kind of baseball they’ve been playing last few weeks and the kind of history that’s been in the stadium. I watched a lot of Red Sox games, ironically, growing up, I loved Boston growing up. I loved just everything about it. So when I heard that it was happening, I was really excited to help this team out.”
The contrast with his 2025 performance for Detroit is notable. That year Jones hit .287 with seven home runs, 23 RBIs, and a .937 OPS across 72 games.
This season, limited playing time and a slower start contributed to his eventual departure. In nine games with Boston after the trade, he has already shown signs of settling in, batting .385 with two home runs and five RBIs in 13 at-bats.
For the Tigers, the addition of Ingrassia represents a low-risk opportunity to bolster their pitching depth in the lower levels of the system.
While the organization continues to navigate larger questions surrounding its competitive window and potential deadline activity involving Skubal, the completion of the Jones deal quietly adds another arm to the prospect pipeline.
