New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez and the team remain far apart in discussions over a potential contract extension, according to the latest report from an NFL insider.

Albert Breer of NFL Network indicated the Patriots and Gonzalez currently stand at a significant distance from wrapping up the negotiations.
Breer stressed that the gap does not rule out a rapid shift in the near future. He also linked the approach taken by Gonzalez to that of Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon, noting the two share representation.
Breer believes each player is pursuing an agreement that would reset the financial standard for the position with their respective clubs.
Appearing on a Boston radio show, the insider provided this assessment of the situation.
“No, they aren’t close right now. That doesn’t mean it can’t change quickly. These things can change fast,” Breer said on NBC Sports Boston’s Arbella Early Edition.
“I think it is a gesture of good faith that he is practicing, but I think both of these guys are looking for the same thing, which is a market setter on every measure.”
