Yankees Linked to Potential Blockbuster Trade With the Cubs

The New York Yankees could explore potential trade options for outfield help after Cody Bellinger’s recent hamstring injury left the team further depleted in the outfield. Bellinger strained his hamstring while trying to leg out a double against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.

Manager Aaron Boone said the outfielder will miss at least a month, with the expected recovery timeline ranging from four to six weeks.

The injury compounds existing problems for the Yankees. Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge are already on the injured list, leaving the club with limited depth in the outfield and a clear need for additional production.

New York is particularly seeking a right-handed bat to balance the lineup. Acquiring such a player before the trade deadline would address both the immediate absence of Bellinger and the broader shortage of right-handed power in the outfield.

Karl Rasmussen of Sports Illustrated has suggested three potential names the Yankees could consider targeting.

Among the names Rasmussen identified as potential fits is Chicago Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki. Suzuki is in the final year of his contract and could become available if the Cubs decide to address their pitching needs through a deal.

The Cubs have been searching for ways to bolster their rotation. Rasmussen noted that a package centered on a near-major league-ready pitching prospect, such as Ben Hess or Chase Hampton, might form the foundation of discussions between the two clubs.

Suzuki has delivered consistent offensive production this season. He owns an .827 OPS with 18 home runs, 58 RBIs and 55 runs scored. Those home run totals rank eighth among all right-handed hitters in the majors.

He has also shown sustained power over a longer stretch. Suzuki has hit at least 20 home runs in each of the past three seasons, including a career-high 32 last year. His OPS ranks 10th among right-handed hitters this season, making him an appealing option for a team looking to add right-handed strength.

Defensively, Suzuki projects best as a corner outfielder. The Yankees could place him in right field while keeping Trent Grisham in center field until Bellinger is ready to return. That alignment would provide stability without requiring major adjustments to the current defensive alignment.

A trade for Suzuki would likely carry a higher cost than other potential targets. Rasmussen described him as a more expensive option than some alternatives because of his offensive upside, yet the added production could justify the price for a contending club.

The Cubs remain competitive and may prove reluctant to part with a productive bat. Still, the opportunity to improve a depleted pitching staff could persuade Chicago to listen to offers as the deadline approaches.

Whether the Yankees ultimately pursue Suzuki or turn to other possibilities, the injury has forced the organization to confront its thin outfield depth sooner than expected. Any move involving the Cubs outfielder would represent a significant investment aimed at keeping the Yankees competitive through the stretch run.

As the trade deadline nears, general manager Brian Cashman and his staff will continue evaluating available talent. Suzuki’s combination of power, consistency and corner-outfield versatility positions him as one of the more intriguing names connected to the Yankees in the current market.
