The Boston Red Sox have already swung one deal before the MLB trade deadline, acquiring infielder Curtis Mead in a pact with the Washington Nationals. Do they have another major move in them?

In particular, the Red Sox have a need at shortstop, and they have been linked to players like Zach Neto and Jeremy Pena to fill that void. They have also been tabbed as a potential landing spot for Francisco Lindor.

Would Boston take the plunge with Lindor and his bloated contract?

Christopher Kline of FanSided feels it’s a possibility, but only if Boston proves willing to absorb the bulk of his remaining contract, which carries an average annual value of $32.5 million through 2032.

Kline proposed a trade that would send four players back to the New York Mets in the deal, including Trevor Story and the $25 million he is owed in 2027. That salary swap creates the necessary breathing room for the Red Sox to complete the deal by sending back a package of young talent designed to help the Mets rebuild.

At the center of that return sits Marcelo Mayer. The 23-year-old has endured a trying second full season, but Kline emphasizes his defensive versatility across the infield and the reasonable expectation that his bat will eventually rebound. Mayer’s upside, combined with the change of scenery Lindor himself would receive, forms the foundation of the exchange.

Complementing Mayer are two additional pieces that address the Mets’ longer-term needs. Kyson Witherspoon, one of Boston’s top pitching prospects, would arrive as a potential cornerstone for the next generation of New York arms, a group that already includes Nolan McLean and Jonah Tong.

Alongside him is Mikey Romeo, a prospect whose combination of defensive flexibility and pull-side power could accelerate his path into the Mets’ everyday lineup.

Together these players give New York a tangible infusion of controllable talent while allowing Boston to install a proven, high-upside shortstop whose metrics, Kline observes, already hint at an impending uptick in production.

The appeal for the Red Sox is straightforward. Even though Lindor has posted a .686 OPS and 94 wRC+ amid injury-related struggles this season, Fenway Park’s hitter-friendly dimensions and a fresh environment could restore the form that produced four consecutive top-10 MVP finishes.

Taking on an expensive veteran always carries risk, yet Kline argues the current free-agent market makes Lindor’s $32.5 million salary a relative bargain for a club with Boston’s resources.

If the deal materializes, the Red Sox would not only bolster their middle-infield defense and lineup but also position themselves more firmly as American League contenders before the deadline expires.
