The Chicago White Sox enter the final week before the trade deadline in search of a starting catcher after an injury depleted an already thin position group.
Kyle Teel, the club’s primary backstop, suffered a left high ankle sprain on July 21 and is expected to miss at least six weeks. The setback has intensified longstanding concerns at the position, where Edgar Quero and Drew Romo have each posted an OPS under .550 this season.
Competition for available catching talent remains intense. Contending clubs such as the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays are also exploring upgrades behind the plate, limiting the pool of realistic targets.
Ryan Jeffers and Hunter Goodman rank among the most prominent names expected to draw interest, a scarcity that is projected to elevate acquisition costs across the board.
In the past several days, the New York Mets have begun making both of their catchers available, and the White Sox have been linked to one of those options. Appearing recently on GM Territory, former general manager Jim Bowden said Chicago is “engaged” in talks with the Mets for catcher Luis Torrens.
Torrens, 30, is widely regarded as one of the premier defensive catchers in the major leagues. He consistently ranks near the top of the sport in framing metrics and pop time while matching the league lead among catchers with a 41 percent caught-stealing percentage.
Offensively, Torrens has struggled, batting .223 with a .284 on-base percentage, .320 slugging percentage, two home runs and a .604 OPS. Even so, those numbers would still mark an improvement over Chicago’s present alternatives.
Defensive excellence behind the plate carries heightened value once the calendar turns to October. The ability to neutralize opposing baserunners can reshape an entire opposing strategy and give a pitching staff greater freedom to attack hitters.
Although Torrens is unlikely to command the same package required for Jeffers or Goodman, he will not come inexpensively. The Mets underscored their regard for him by agreeing to a two-year, $11.5 million extension in early May.
White Sox general manager Chris Getz continues to balance multiple priorities. Starting pitching and relief help remain prominent items on the club’s shopping list alongside catching.
Meeting needs at three separate positions with only seven days remaining presents a complicated challenge. Roster decisions made this week will shape the club’s trajectory for the remainder of the season and beyond.
Chicago sits atop the American League Central, holding a 2.5-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians heading into Monday’s games.
Maintaining that position will require continued reinforcement if the White Sox hope to sustain one of the more compelling narratives in baseball this year.
