Residents across Quetta, Ziarat, and several surrounding areas in Balochistan experienced a brief moment of unease on Saturday as a moderate earthquake struck the region.
According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre, the tremor registered a magnitude of 4 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter situated approximately 37 kilometers northeast of Quetta, the provincial capital.
Seismologists noted that the quake originated at a relatively shallow depth of around 15 kilometers beneath the surface. While the shaking was noticeable enough to alert people in the affected zones, authorities confirmed that no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage had emerged.
Many locals described the event as a short jolt, prompting some to step outside their homes as a precautionary measure before the ground steadied once more.
Pakistan sits in one of the world’s most seismically active zones, positioned along the convergence of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This geological setting makes the country vulnerable to frequent earthquakes, ranging from minor tremors to devastating major events.
Just last month, a stronger 5.4-magnitude quake rattled parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Punjab, with its origins traced back to Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region at a much greater depth. Like the latest incident, that previous tremor fortunately resulted in no reported casualties.
The latest seismic activity serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness in earthquake-prone areas.
Pakistani authorities routinely monitor such events through the Pakistan Meteorological Department, which oversees the National Seismic Monitoring Centre.
In the wake of this mild quake, officials continue to urge residents to stay informed about safety protocols, especially in regions like Balochistan where infrastructure can vary widely.
While this particular earthquake caused little more than a temporary stir, it underscores the ongoing need for resilient building practices and public awareness campaigns.
