The Detroit Lions have turned things around in recent seasons with Jared Goff as their starting quarterback. He has helped execute the plan of general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell, putting the franchise back on the map.

Now, Jared Goff is being rewarded for his production. According to NFL insider Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Detroit Lions and their star quarterback have agreed to a four-year, $212 million contract extension.

$170 million of the deal is guaranteed, according to sources who spoke to ESPN. It is a historic contract for the Detroit Lions, as Jared Goff is now the highest-paid player in the history of the franchise.

The No. 1 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams out of California, Goff is now one of the highest-paid players in NFL history. His $53 million annual salary is second only to the contract Joe Burrow signed with the Cincinnati Bengals last offseason.

The Detroit Lions have made it a point of emphasis this offseason to lock up their cornerstone players to long-term deals. Earlier in the offseason, offensive tackle Penei Sewell and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown also signed top-of-the-market deals to ensure they remain in the Motor City for years to come.

Keeping the core who has helped the Lions climb out of NFL purgatory is good for everyone involved. This is a team that has a chance to be a sustainable winner as Holmes and Campbell have done an excellent job of making their vision for a contender come to life.

Jared Goff has been excellent in three seasons in Detroit, going from a presumed throw-in of the Matthew Stafford blockbuster to their franchise quarterback. He has completed 66.5 percent of his passes for 12,258 yards, 78 touchdowns and only 27 interceptions in 48 starts.
