The San Francisco 49ers have not exactly had an easy time in NFL free agency, as financial constraints have resulted in a mass exodus of players from the Bay.

The 49ers are still plenty talented as is, but there is no question that San Francisco will need to make some moves to plug some holes, especially after going just 6-11 this past season.

Could the Niners ultimately reunite with an old friend to bolster their offense?

Well, running back Raheem Mostert is available, and Mostert said during an appearance on NFL Network that he has already talked with Christian McCaffrey about the possibility of re-joining the 49ers.

“I talked to CMC — one of my guys — we’ve chatted quite some time over the years, and honestly, the Niners have been in discussion,” Mostert said. “I could just say that. We’ve heard from them, and trying to work some stuff out, obviously, but you never know. You can go one direction and then flip within an hour, to another direction. But everything’s on the table for me right now.”

Mostert spent parts of seven seasons in San Francisco, originally arriving in late 2016 and then carving out a rather significant role a couple of years into his Niners tenure.

The 32-year-old was one of the 49ers’ most efficient weapons during their run to a Super Bowl appearance in 2019, rushing for 772 yards and six touchdowns on 5.9 yards per carry.

Mostert remained in San Francisco through 2021 before linking up with the Miami Dolphins, where he made the Pro Bowl in his second season after racking up 1,012 yards and a league-leading 18 scores on the ground.

This past year, Mostert took a massive step back, totaling 278 yards and a couple of touchdowns, but perhaps a return to the Niners could reignite the 33-year-old.
