The San Francisco 49ers took a significant step forward in their preparations for the upcoming season by activating tight end George Kittle from the active/physically unable to perform list on Sunday.

Kittle, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, has been sidelined since suffering a torn right Achilles tendon during the 49ers’ playoff victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Jan. 11. The injury forced him to miss the remainder of the postseason and kept him off the field through the early stages of the offseason program.
Recovery efforts have progressed steadily. On Wednesday, Kittle met with Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the surgeon who performed the Achilles procedure. That appointment produced encouraging results and raised the possibility that the veteran could be ready for the regular-season opener, according to reporting from Adam Schefter of ESPN.
The activation itself does not lock in a Week 1 appearance. The 49ers open the season against the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday, Sept. 10, in Melbourne, Australia. Travel demands and the relatively short recovery timeline could still lead the team to exercise caution.

“George Kittle foreshadowed he would soon be activated off PUP when I asked him about it last week. This does not guarantee Kittle will be available to play Week 1, but it’s a big step in that direction.”
With the designation lifted, Kittle is now eligible to practice fully with his teammates. An update from Matt Barrows of The Athletic indicated that the tight end was already in uniform for Sunday’s session.

Dr. Jesse Morse highlighted the impressive nature of the recovery, noting that Kittle is only about eight months removed from reconstructive surgery.

The presence of Kittle, known for his blocking prowess and reliable receiving skills, would strengthen an offense that has relied on him as a key piece for years. Even if he is not fully ready for the overseas opener, the ability to rejoin practices allows the coaching staff to evaluate his condition in real time and build chemistry with quarterback Brock Purdy and the rest of the skill-position group.
