The San Francisco 49ers enter Week 6 as one of the NFL’s most complete teams, sitting at 5-0 and preparing for a Monday Night Football spotlight that further cements their place among the league’s early favorites.

While the focus remains on sustaining that momentum, a developing situation in Indianapolis has quietly shifted attention toward a familiar face who once helped anchor the 49ers’ defensive line.

DeForest Buckner, the defensive tackle the 49ers selected in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft, spent his first four seasons in San Francisco before moving to the Colts.

During those early years he recorded 28.5 sacks, 74 quarterback hits, and 34 tackles for loss, establishing himself as a disruptive interior presence under the scheme that helped define the Kyle Shanahan era.

Now an 11-year veteran, Buckner has remained a productive piece in Indianapolis, yet the Colts’ trajectory has grown increasingly uncertain.

That uncertainty deepened after Indianapolis fell to the previously winless Tennessee Titans, a result that left the Colts at 2-4 and prompted the organization to part ways with general manager Chris Ballard on Monday.

Midseason front-office changes are uncommon, and the move arrives at a moment when Buckner himself voiced clear frustration.

Following the Titans, loss he remarked that he was “sick and tired of the same song and dance every year,” a sentiment that aligns with the Colts’ recent pattern of missing the postseason.

The combination of organizational upheaval and Buckner’s public dissatisfaction has altered the trade calculus, according to 49ers reporter Davis Lombardi, who noted that a return to San Francisco “just got a whole lot more possible.”

For a 5-0 team already generating consistent pressure up front, adding a proven interior rusher who understands the defensive scheme and has a history of success in it would represent a targeted reinforcement rather than a wholesale overhaul.

Buckner’s age means he is past his absolute peak, yet his production and familiarity with the 49ers’ system could still provide meaningful value in a playoff push.

Whether any discussions materialize remains speculative.

Trade activity typically intensifies closer to the deadline, and both sides would need to agree on compensation that fits the 49ers’ long-term roster construction.

Still, the sudden vacancy in Indianapolis’s decision-making structure removes one layer of institutional resistance that previously made such a reunion unlikely.

As San Francisco continues to stack wins, the possibility of reacquiring a player who once helped shape its defensive identity has moved from distant rumor to a more realistic conversation heading into the second half of the season.
