Nick Bosa’s latest San Francisco 49ers setback has turned a familiar name back toward Santa Clara.
After the 49ers star suffered a calf injury in practice this week and was ruled out against the Arizona Cardinals, the conversation around emergency help on the edge has settled less on family reunion talk and more on Leonard Floyd, the veteran who already knows this building.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Bosa is expected to miss several weeks, with injured reserve still on the table.
For a defensive line already thinned by season-ending and long-term injuries, that timeline is long enough to force a phone call. At least that’s what 49ers reporter Sterling Bennett thinks.
Floyd is the most natural short-term fit. He spent 2024 in San Francisco and posted 8.5 sacks across 17 starts before a cap-driven release sent him to Atlanta last year.
Before that, he had a career-best 10.5-sack season with the Buffalo Bills in 2023. He has accumulated 70 sacks throughout his NFL tenure.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan already confirmed the team reached out after losing Sam Okuayinonu, and 49ers reporter Sterling Bennett put the urgency in blunt terms after Bosa went down, saying Floyd should be on a plane to Santa Clara.
That is not nostalgia. It is scheme familiarity meeting a roster that now lists Keion White, Khalid Kareem, and Ogbo Okoronkwo as the healthy ends, with first-round pick Mykel Williams still on the physically unable to perform list.
The hesitation is obvious. Floyd is 34 and saw his production dip with the Falcons, finishing 2025 with only 3.5 sacks and a reduced snap count. Teams do not pay prime-year money for that profile, and there is no guarantee he still wants to play after bouncing from Buffalo to San Francisco to Atlanta in three seasons.
Yet the 49ers are not shopping for a long-term cornerstone. They need a rusher who can win on passing downs while Bosa’s calf, and the lingering effects of last year’s ACL tear, keep him out of the rotation.
Floyd has done that job in this defense before. He also has a working relationship with defensive coordinator Raheem Morris from last season in Atlanta, which lowers the installation cost if a deal comes together this weekend.
Whether San Francisco actually signs him remains unsettled. Shanahan has said conversations have happened and that nobody is locked in.
Other veterans could enter the picture if Floyd wants more than a stopgap role or if another contender moves first. What the Bosa injury did was remove the luxury of waiting.
The 49ers cannot treat edge depth as a November problem when their best pass rusher is already in street clothes for Week 3.
Floyd is not the flashiest name attached to this vacancy, but he is the one who can walk into the building, put on a familiar number, and play without a crash course. That is why the speculation has shifted toward him, and why the next few days will tell whether Santa Clara finally follows through on a reunion it has already started discussing.
