The San Francisco 49ers have spent the opening weeks of 2026 patching holes in a wide receiver room that once looked like one of the league’s deepest.
After Ricky Pearsall’s season-ending knee surgery, a lengthy absence for rookie De’Zhaun Stribling, Christian Kirk’s stay on injured reserve, and now Demarcus Robinson’s high-ankle sprain, the group has been reduced to a handful of healthy bodies. Mike Evans is dealing with a hip issue of his own.
To answer their woes at the position, the 49ers have signed Brandin Cooks, via ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Cooks arrives 189 yards short of 10,000 career receiving yards, a milestone that would cap a 13-year journey that began as a first-round pick out of Oregon State.
He is no longer the vertical threat who posted six 1,000-yard seasons, the last of them in 2021. What he still offers is familiarity with the speed of an NFL offense, precise route running, and the ability to work the slot, the exact profile Kyle Shanahan’s scheme often needs when the outside receivers are banged up.
The 49ers can keep him on the practice squad while he learns the playbook, then elevate him if another injury hits before Kirk or Robinson returns.
That flexibility matters. After two games San Francisco sits 2-0, but the offense cannot keep leaning solely on Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, and a limited Evans. Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins will see more snaps by necessity.
Adding a veteran who has produced in multiple systems gives Shanahan another option without committing a 53-man roster spot immediately.
Cooks worked out for Baltimore last week and chose not to sign there; Santa Clara apparently presented a clearer path to actual game action once he is up to speed.
His two seasons in Dallas were modest and injury-interrupted, and last year’s split between New Orleans and Buffalo produced little volume. Those recent numbers will not fool anyone in the building.
The 49ers are not asking him to recapture 2016 form. They are asking him to know alignments, run the right depth on option routes, and stay healthy long enough to be a reliable extra body.
In a year already defined by attrition at the position, that is a reasonable ask.
If Cooks can absorb the scheme quickly, he becomes insurance for a team that still has Super Bowl aspirations and a quarterback who thrives when the route tree is fully stocked.
The practice-squad signing is not glamorous. Given the state of the 49ers’ receiver depth, it is simply necessary.
