With the 2024 NBA Draft completed, what grade did the Brooklyn Nets receive for their draft?
Just before the 2024 NBA Draft, the Brooklyn Nets were wheeling and dealing with an eye on the future. First, the Nets decided to trade Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks for a package of mostly future first-round draft picks.
The decision to trade Bridges is a clear sign that the Nets are going to be looking toward the future. There are going to be some tough seasons coming up in Brooklyn, as there will be plenty of losing.
Furthermore, they then were able to get some of their picks back from the Houston Rockets, which were part of the James Harden deal. Considering the Brooklyn Nets saw the Rockets have the third pick in the draft this season, which should have been theirs, certainly stings.
Recently, ESPN gave grades to the Nets for their 2024 NBA Draft. With no picks, here’s what they had to say.
Brooklyn Nets: Incomplete
The Nets sent the No. 3 overall pick to Houston as part of their 2021 trade for James Harden, a painful outcome in that it may have influenced Brooklyn’s trading to extinguish a 2025 swap with the Rockets and get back its 2026 pick. After that trade, we can expect the host team to pick high a year from now as the Nets embrace a rebuild.
Considering the Brooklyn Nets were one of the worst teams in the NBA last season, not having their first-round pick or any others certainly has to be disappointing. However, the Nets seem to have a clear-cut plan to build through the draft in years to come, but this is a rebuild that is going to take time.
While rebuilding is never a fun thing for a franchise, the Brooklyn Nets will be well-equipped moving forward now with plenty of draft capital. Avoiding a similar outcome to the 2024 NBA Draft should be considered a win.
