2024 NBA Draft: Boston Celtics Receive a Very Good Grade

After winning the NBA Title just a few days ago, what grade did the Boston Celtics receive for their 2024 NBA Draft?

The Boston Celtics were finally able to win the NBA Title after years of being right on the doorstep. This was a big moment for Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, who have both been criticized over the years for the failures of the Celtics.

A great offseason last year by Boston in which they brought in Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis helped solidify the team on both ends of the court and it resulted in a title.

With the franchise shifting focus to the draft, ESPN recently graded the Boston Celtics’ performance during the 2024 NBA Draft. Here’s what they had to say.

Boston Celtics: B+

Round 1: Baylor Scheierman (No. 30)

Round 2: Anton Watson (No. 54)

With all eight players who saw at least 20 minutes of action in the NBA Finals under contract, the Celtics had the luxury of drafting with an eye toward a couple of years down the road. Given that framework, I would have preferred a swing on Kansas forward Johnny Furphy, who’s four years younger than the 23-year-old Scheierman. Still, it’s easy to see how Scheierman’s shooting and size will fit in Boston much the same way as Sam Hauser does now.

The Celtics took another experienced player in Round 2, Gonzaga forward Anton Watson. Watson offers defensive versatility and shot 41% from 3 as a fifth-year senior, albeit on just 51 attempts.

With their two selections in the 2024 NBA Draft, the Boston Celtics wanted to draft players that they think can help sooner rather than later. Many teams in the Celtics’ situation would have taken projects in this scenario, but the Celtics chose to do otherwise.

Drafting veteran college players has generally speaking worked out well for teams recently, as we have seen plenty of 19-year-olds with potential flop in the league. With much of the roster coming back next season and a couple of veteran college players coming in, the Boston Celtics will be poised to attempt to repeat as champions.
