The New York Yankees enter the offseason with a clear priority at the hot corner after Ryan McMahon’s 2026 campaign failed to meet expectations.

Acquired from the Colorado Rockies in 2025 to provide steady defense and occasional power, McMahon instead delivered a .213/.279/.357 slash line with just 11 home runs and a 78 wRC+ across 360 plate appearances.

His once-elite glove work also regressed, leaving the Bronx Bombers searching for an upgrade that can both stabilize the position and inject middle-of-the-order thump into a lineup that finished short of a division title.

According to Christopher Kline of FanSided, the solution could arrive from Japan in the form of Teruaki Sato.

In a recent free-agency projection, Kline forecast a three-year, $75 million contract that would bring the 27-year-old Hanshin Tigers slugger to the Bronx.

Sato just completed an MVP-caliber season in Nippon Professional Baseball, batting .306 with 39 home runs and a .991 OPS while capturing the Central League Triple Crown.

That left-handed power profile aligns with what the Yankees have lacked at third base, where McMahon’s limited impact forced the club to mix in other options during stretches of the regular season and postseason.

For the Yankees, signing Sato would represent both a roster fix and a calculated risk.

McMahon remains under contract for 2027, yet his declining production has already sparked internal discussions about alternative arrangements, whether through a trade or simply absorbing the remaining salary.

Sato’s age and recent track record offer the upside of a multi-year contributor who can slide into the lineup immediately, potentially lengthening the batting order around the club’s established stars.

While swing-and-miss tendencies and questions about his defensive translation from NPB to the majors exist—echoing concerns that once surrounded other Japanese imports—the Yankees possess the financial flexibility to absorb a short-term deal that protects against those variables.

The short framework Kline outlines would allow New York to evaluate Sato’s adjustment without locking into an extended commitment, all while addressing a position that has been a consistent soft spot.

With the free-agent market otherwise thin on impact infield bats, the Yankees appear positioned to act on a player who posted elite production overseas and could immediately upgrade the third-base production McMahon was unable to sustain.

Such a move would signal a proactive approach to an area that held the lineup back in 2026, giving the organization a younger, higher-ceiling option as it looks to rebound in 2027.
