The Seattle Seahawks’ narrow overtime defeat to the Denver Broncos has prompted fresh scrutiny of their ground game, and one prominent voice believes the franchise should consider a bold fix.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk floated the idea of pursuing a trade for Philadelphia Eagles star Saquon Barkley, arguing that if Seattle truly wants to recommit to the run, the All-Pro back represents the clearest path.
The suggestion follows the departure of Kenneth Walker III in free agency, a move some observers now view as a misstep that left the backfield thinner than expected.
During a discussion with Michael Holley, Florio framed the hypothetical as a commitment to balance rather than a splashy headline.
Holley did not dismiss the notion, noting that the Eagles have underperformed this season and have already shown a willingness to reshape their roster.
Philadelphia recently dealt Pro Bowl center Cam Jurgens and a late-round pick to the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for future selections, signaling that few pieces are entirely off-limits when the front office decides a change is warranted.
Additional roster activity, including the addition of quarterback Joe Milton amid Jalen Hurts’ recovery from a superficial blood clot, has only reinforced the sense of fluidity in Philadelphia.
Any pursuit of Barkley would still face significant practical hurdles.
The 29-year-old, who signed a two-year, $41.2 million contract extension with the Eagles in March 2025, is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury and was listed as out for the Eagles’ upcoming matchup, forcing any interested team to weigh his immediate availability against longer-term production.
Through four appearances this season, he has rushed for 182 yards on 36 carries, a 5.1-yard average that echoes the efficiency he displayed during a 1,140-yard campaign in 2025 and his 2,005-yard, Offensive Player of the Year season in 2024.
Those numbers underscore why the idea carries appeal for a Seahawks offense that leaned heavily on the pass in its most recent loss, with Sam Darnold attempting more than 50 throws while the running game managed only modest gains.
For Seattle, sitting at 3-3, the conversation arrives at a moment when offensive identity remains unsettled.
Acquiring Barkley would immediately alter the backfield’s ceiling, yet the price, his health timeline, and Philadelphia’s willingness to move a cornerstone of recent championship-caliber teams would all require careful evaluation.
Whether the suggestion remains idle speculation or evolves into something more concrete will depend on how both franchises assess their needs in the weeks ahead.
