The Washington Huskies head east on Friday evening with hopes of ending a rough stretch in Big Ten play. Coach Jedd Fisch’s squad has dropped three consecutive games and sits at 0-3 in conference action after an early season that once carried higher expectations.

A road trip to Purdue offers a clear opportunity to steady the ship before a bye week arrives.

Purdue enters the matchup at Ross-Ade Stadium with the same overall record of 3-3. The Boilermakers have won their past two league contests, including a convincing victory over Minnesota, and will look to keep that momentum going under the lights.

Washington, meanwhile, has struggled to find consistency on offense after early non-conference wins.

The game, set for an 8 p.m. ET kickoff on FOX, carries added weight for the Huskies as they seek their first conference victory of 2026. A win would also improve their position heading into the second half of the schedule, while a loss would deepen the hole in the standings.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel has confirmed that Elijah Brown will start at quarterback for Washington against Purdue tonight. The junior transfer has taken first-team repetitions throughout the week of preparation. Demond Williams continues to work through a rib injury sustained in the previous game.

“Source: Elijah Brown will start at quarterback for Washington against Purdue tonight. He’s been working with the first team this week as Demond Williams is working his way through a rib injury,” Thamel reported on X.

Williams exited the Huskies’ loss to Iowa late in the first half after absorbing a hard hit while scrambling. Medical staff evaluated the injury on the sideline, and he did not return. Coach Fisch later described the issue as significant and indicated that a quick return appeared unlikely based on Williams’ physical condition.

Brown stepped in during the second half against the Hawkeyes and helped generate all three of Washington’s touchdowns. He completed 28 of 39 passes for 251 yards without throwing an interception, giving the offense some life after an ineffective opening stretch. That performance marked his most extensive action since joining the program from Stanford.

The Huskies trailed 27-0 when Brown entered, yet he engineered scoring drives that made the final margin more respectable at 41-24. Fisch noted after the game that Brown showed good command and got the ball out of his hands quickly to the primary receivers. Those traits will be tested again on the road against a Purdue defense that has shown improvement in recent weeks.

Brown arrived in Seattle during the offseason after two seasons at Stanford, where he started several games and gained experience in a similar offensive system. The former Mater Dei High School standout was viewed as a capable backup option behind Williams, who had started every game since late in the 2024 season prior to the injury.

Williams finished the Iowa contest with six completions on 11 attempts for 69 yards before leaving. His absence shifts the focus to Brown’s ability to operate the full game plan, including managing the pocket and making pre-snap adjustments that the coaching staff has emphasized in practice.

The Huskies’ offense has averaged around 26 points per game this season, a drop from last year’s production when Williams served as a dual-threat leader. Brown’s arm strength and decision-making will need to compensate for the mobility that Williams typically brings on designed runs and scrambles. Purdue’s secondary has allowed more than 240 passing yards per game, which could create openings if Brown finds his rhythm early.

Washington’s rushing attack has also been limited in recent losses, totaling just 90 yards per contest overall. Brian Bonner Jr. and the backfield will likely need to complement Brown’s passing to keep Purdue’s defense from loading up against the drop-back game. The Boilermakers rank higher in total offense and have generated more explosive plays through their own ground game led by Fame Ijeboi.

Fisch has emphasized throughout the week that the team must focus on execution rather than external noise around the quarterback position. Brown’s first start as a Husky comes with the pressure of trying to reverse a three-game slide on the road, where crowd noise and unfamiliar surroundings can complicate communication.

Purdue coach Ryan Walters will prepare his defense knowing Brown’s strengths from film study of the Iowa game. The Boilermakers have recorded seven sacks in six games and will look to pressure the new starter early to disrupt timing. Washington’s offensive line, which allowed multiple sacks against Iowa, faces a key test in protecting Brown over a full 60 minutes.

Both programs sit in the middle of the Big Ten standings with identical records, making the outcome potentially influential for bowl positioning later in the year. Washington holds an 8-2-1 all-time series advantage over Purdue and has never lost at Ross-Ade Stadium, though the last meeting came in a different conference alignment.

The Huskies practiced with Brown as the primary quarterback all week while Williams received treatment and limited work. Officials expect Williams to remain limited or inactive for the contest, clearing the path for Brown to take the snaps from the opening drive.

A strong showing could solidify his role moving forward if Williams’ recovery extends beyond this week.
