Former Chicago Cubs manager David Ross has emerged as a potential candidate for the Houston Astros’ managerial vacancy, offering a fresh chapter for the longtime fan favorite known as Grandpa Rossy.

The Astros announced Wednesday they will not renew Joe Espada’s contract after it expires at month’s end. Espada guided Houston to an 81-81 mark in 2026 that secured the American League West but ended in a two-game wild-card sweep by the Chicago White Sox.

Ross managed the Cubs from 2020 through 2023, compiling a 262-284 record. He led the club to the National League Central title in the shortened 2020 season before the Miami Marlins eliminated Chicago in the wild-card round.

Cubs fans still revere Ross for his role as a player on the 2016 World Series team that ended a 108-year championship drought. He hit a home run in Game 7 and became a clubhouse leader during that historic run.

Ross’s final season in 2023 produced an 83-79 record, a step forward after consecutive sub-.500 finishes. The Cubs dismissed him in November 2023 to clear the way for Craig Counsell.

From a Cubs perspective, Ross’s tenure navigated a painful rebuild following the departure of key 2016 contributors. The organization traded several stars at the 2021 deadline, forcing Ross to develop younger talent while maintaining competitiveness.

The Astros’ search comes as the franchise seeks stability after missing the playoffs in 2025 and failing to advance in the postseason under Espada. Espada finished with a 256-229 managerial record and two division titles but zero playoff series wins.

Sportsnaut listed Ross among seven replacement options, noting his experience and the possibility he has improved from lessons learned in his first managerial role. Other names include Albert Pujols, Brad Ausmus and Rocco Baldelli.

Ross has remained active in baseball circles since leaving the Cubs dugout. He works as an ESPN analyst and co-hosts a podcast with former teammate Anthony Rizzo, frequently reflecting on his Cubs years.

Earlier this year, Ross indicated openness to another managerial opportunity, saying he would answer the phone if interested clubs called. That stance positions him as a realistic option for clubs like Houston seeking proven leadership.

Cubs supporters remember Ross’s steady hand during transition. Under his watch, players such as Nico Hoerner and Justin Steele took major steps forward, helping set the stage for later success.

Counsell has since guided the Cubs to 264 wins against 222 losses over three seasons, including playoff appearances in 2025 and 2026. Yet the franchise’s connection to Ross remains strong, as evidenced by warm ovations at the 10-year 2016 reunion.

Any move by Ross to Houston would close one chapter while opening another. His 15-year playing career included two World Series rings, and his managerial path began with a division title in Year 1.

Astros owner Jim Crane has emphasized finding the right fit after parting with both Espada and former general manager Dana Brown. Ross’s blend of championship experience and recent front-office proximity could appeal to a team aiming to recapture its earlier form.

For Cubs fans, the development serves as a reminder of Ross’s lasting imprint. Whether he lands in Houston or elsewhere, the organization that once counted him as both player and manager continues to benefit from the culture he helped foster.

The managerial carousel continues across the league. Ross’s name adds intrigue, particularly for those who watched him grow from backup catcher to respected skipper in Chicago.
