The Houston Texans have begun the process of bringing linebacker Henry To’oTo’o back from injured reserve, according to a report from NFL insider Aaron Wilson.
The designation opens a three-week practice window that allows the 25-year-old to work with the team before the club must decide whether to activate him to the 53-man roster or leave him on IR for the remainder of the season.
To’oTo’o sustained the shoulder injury in the Texans’ Week 1 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
He was placed on injured reserve in mid-September after the team determined the injury would sideline him for more than the minimum four games, with some reports at the time suggesting a recovery closer to six or eight weeks.
The early timeline had pointed toward a potential mid-to-late October or early November return, so the designation arrives roughly in line with those initial projections.
The move restores a proven piece to a linebacker group that has operated without one of its regular starters. To’oTo’o played every game in 2025 and finished with 95 total tackles, nine tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, a fumble recovery, and four pass deflections.
Those numbers reflected the role he had carved out since arriving as a fifth-round pick in 2023. Through one game this season he had recorded two tackles before the injury ended his availability.
His path to Houston included an unusual college route. He began as a true freshman starter at Tennessee before transferring to Alabama, where he earned second-team All-SEC honors in 2020 and 2021 and first-team recognition in 2022.
The Texans selected him with the 167th overall pick. Entering the final year of his original rookie contract, he signed a two-year, $16 million extension this offseason that kept him under team control through 2028 and included substantial guarantees.
The designation does not guarantee an immediate return to game action. The three-week window gives the medical and coaching staffs time to evaluate his readiness and how his shoulder responds to full practice.
If the Texans activate him within that period, he would rejoin a defense that has already navigated several absences on the front seven.
Should the team elect not to activate him by the end of the window, he would remain on injured reserve and be ineligible to return for the rest of the regular season.
For a player who has started consistently since his rookie year and who received a multi-year commitment just weeks before the injury, the designation marks the first concrete step toward reclaiming his place in the lineup.
Whether that step leads to meaningful snaps in the coming weeks will depend on how he progresses over the next 21 days.
