The New England Patriots signed running back Hassan Haskins to their practice squad Tuesday, adding a familiar option after TreVeyon Henderson suffered a high ankle sprain that is expected to sideline him for multiple weeks.
Henderson sustained the injury in the second quarter of Sunday’s 45-17 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The second-year back will not require surgery.
The Patriots view Henderson as a quick healer and hope he can return sooner rather than later. He left the game after an 11-yard run when he was tackled by Raiders safety Jeremy Chinn and did not return.
Henderson has 163 rushing yards and one touchdown on 42 carries this season, averaging 3.9 yards per attempt through four games. He also has two receptions for 22 yards.
The Ohio State product missed the season opener with a different ankle injury before returning in Week 2. He had split time with Rhamondre Stevenson in recent weeks.
As a rookie in 2025, Henderson rushed for 1,132 yards and 10 touchdowns while totaling more than 1,200 scrimmage yards overall.
Haskins rejoins New England after an earlier stint this year. The Patriots signed him to the 90-man roster on Aug. 12, released him near the roster deadline, then kept him on the practice squad until Sept. 14.
He has appeared in 44 games over his career with the Tennessee Titans and Los Angeles Chargers, totaling 76 carries for 229 yards and two touchdowns. Haskins also has 18 receptions for 119 yards and one score.
At nearly 6-foot-2 and 228 pounds, the 26-year-old provides size in the backfield.
With Henderson out, Stevenson is expected to handle the primary workload. The veteran has 57 carries for 227 yards and two touchdowns this season, averaging 4.0 yards per attempt, plus 15 catches for 111 yards.
Corey Kiner served as the main backup against the Raiders, rushing for 52 yards on six carries after Henderson exited, though he lost a fumble. Lan Larison remains available on the practice squad and could be elevated.
The Patriots enter their Week 6 game against the New York Jets at 3-2. They face the Jets on Sunday at Gillette Stadium, followed by a Thursday night trip to the Chicago Bears.
Haskins’ addition gives the team another body for practice and potential elevation while Henderson recovers. He last appeared in 12 games for the Chargers in 2025, primarily contributing on special teams.
