The Philadelphia Eagles signed running back Carson Steele from the practice squad to the active roster on Friday as the team deals with injuries in its backfield ahead of Sunday’s London matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars, via the NFL transaction wire.
Philadelphia also elevated center Jake Majors from the practice squad, released quarterback Andy Dalton, and placed defensive tackle Uar Bernard on the practice squad injured list.
The moves come as Saquon Barkley is ruled out with a hamstring injury and Tank Bigsby remains on injured reserve with an abdomen issue.
Will Shipley is expected to handle the primary workload, with Dameon Pierce and Steele available in rotational roles.
Steele, 23, joins the Eagles after a productive 2024 season with the Kansas City Chiefs, where the undrafted free agent out of UCLA appeared in 17 games (three starts) and carried 56 times for 183 yards while also catching seven passes for 26 yards, primarily as a fullback.
He spent the 2025 season on Kansas City’s practice squad before signing a reserve/future contract with Philadelphia in January.
The Greenwood, Indiana, native stood out during the Eagles’ preseason, rushing 21 times for 59 yards and leading the team in receiving with 14 catches for 136 yards and two touchdowns.
His highlight-reel hurdles over defenders made him a fan favorite and helped him clear waivers after final cuts before returning to the practice squad.
Steele’s college production underscored his upside.
As a sophomore at Ball State in 2022, he rushed for 1,556 yards on 289 carries (5.4 yards per attempt) and scored 14 touchdowns in 12 games, adding 29 receptions for 166 yards and one score.
He later transferred to UCLA, where he continued to contribute before going undrafted.
The Eagles enter the Week 5 game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at 2-2 after consecutive losses, facing a 3-1 Jaguars team in a 9:30 a.m. ET kickoff.
With Barkley sidelined and the offense already adjusting to recent offensive-line changes, Steele’s dual-threat ability as a runner and receiver gives Philadelphia another option in a depleted backfield.
Whether Steele sees significant snaps remains to be seen, but his promotion provides immediate depth as the Eagles look to stabilize their ground game on the road.
