The San Francisco 49ers released defensive lineman Ogbo Okoronkwo on Friday, clearing a roster spot as the club prepares to bring back a younger piece of its defensive front.

The move was announced by the team and is tied to the expected activation of Mykel Williams from the physically unable to perform list.

Williams has been unavailable to open the season, and his return gives San Francisco a chance to restore a player who was already part of the roster plan rather than continue carrying a veteran stopgap.

For Okoronkwo, the release ends a short stay that began when the 49ers signed him in August, after he had spent the previous season recovering from a torn triceps suffered in late September 2025.

That injury cost him the rest of the year and left him looking for a new landing spot once he was healthy enough to compete again.

Okoronkwo, 31, is a fifth-round product of the 2018 draft, selected 160th overall by the Los Angeles Rams out of Oklahoma. He finished the final season of a four-year, $2.9 million rookie contract in Los Angeles, then signed a one-year deal with the Houston Texans for 2022.

Cleveland followed with the largest commitment of his career, a three-year agreement worth $19 million and as much as $22 million with incentives.

He was entering the last year of that contract, with a base salary of $2.235 million, when the Browns released him. He caught on with the Philadelphia Eagles before the triceps injury interrupted his season and set up the later move to San Francisco.

His production with the 49ers was modest. He appeared in four games in 2026 and finished with two tackles and one sack. Those numbers did not lock him into a role once Williams was ready to come off the PUP list, and the club chose the open roster spot over keeping both players.

Releases of this kind are common in October, when teams have to balance injured-reserve and practice-squad rules against the simple arithmetic of a 53-man roster.

A veteran who was signed in August to provide depth can be the first name removed if a projected starter is cleared to return.

Okoronkwo’s path has been that of a rotational edge player rather than a long-term starter. Drafted late, he earned a multiyear deal in Cleveland on the strength of his pass-rush snaps, then bounced through Philadelphia and San Francisco after the Browns moved on.

The triceps tear last fall was the clearest break in that run. Friday’s release does not erase the chance that another club will claim him or sign him once he clears waivers, particularly a team looking for experienced depth on the edge.

For San Francisco, the transaction is narrower: one veteran out, and a path open for Williams to rejoin the active defense.
