The Milwaukee Brewers moved Christian Yelich into the No. 2 spot in the batting order Wednesday ahead of Game 4 of the National League Division Series against the San Diego Padres.
Manager Pat Murphy made the switch after San Diego won Tuesday night’s game 4-3, trimming Milwaukee’s series lead to 2-1.
Yelich, 34, had batted fifth or lower for nearly the entire regular season and through the first three games of the series.
The designated hitter recorded a hit in each of those three games, including two hits in Tuesday’s loss at Petco Park.
Jake Bauers occupied the second spot in Game 3 and went 0 for 4 with four strikeouts. Bauers will bat fifth and start at first base, while Yelich remains the designated hitter.
Underdog MLB posted the lineup as: “Brewers 10/7 J. Chourio LF C. Yelich DH W. Contreras C B. Turang 2B J. Bauers 1B C. Pratt SS S. Frelick RF G. Mitchell CF J. Ortiz 3B R. Gasser SP.”
Jackson Chourio leads off in left field. William Contreras bats third and catches. Brice Turang hits cleanup at second base.
Cooper Pratt starts at shortstop, Sal Frelick in right field, Garrett Mitchell in center field and Joey Ortiz at third base.
Left-hander Robert Gasser starts for Milwaukee and is expected to work on a short leash. The Padres counter with right-hander Walker Buehler.
Yelich closed the regular season batting .235 with 12 home runs and 59 RBIs in 118 games. He posted a .315 on-base percentage and a .378 slugging percentage, good for a .692 OPS, across 442 at-bats.
The Brewers finished the regular season 103-59.
A Padres win Wednesday would send the series back to Milwaukee for a decisive Game 5 on Friday.
The Brewers would likely turn to ace Jacob Misiorowski in that game. Misiorowski started Game 1 and lasted three innings.
Milwaukee took the first two games of the series at American Family Field before the clubs shifted to San Diego.
Yelich was named the first captain in Brewers history late in the regular season and wears a “C” on his jersey.
