Chicago Bears quarterback Tyson Bagent will start Sunday when the team visits the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.

Head coach Ben Johnson settled the question during his weekly radio interview Monday on ESPN 1000 Chicago.

“Tyson will be the guy,” Johnson said. “We’ll go from there. We’re in good shape.”

The decision means injured starter Caleb Williams will miss a third consecutive game.

Williams left the Sept. 20 loss to the Minnesota Vikings with a Grade 2 hamstring strain and has not practiced since. Recovery windows for that grade of strain commonly stretch three to four weeks, leaving his availability for later October games uncertain.

Bagent directed the offense for nearly the entire 23-12 win over the New York Jets on Sunday. He finished 25 of 34 for 268 yards and one interception, good for an 83.9 passer rating.

Chicago held the ball for 42 minutes and 45 seconds and piled up a franchise-record 34 first downs.

Backup running back Kyle Monangai rushed 30 times for 146 yards and two touchdowns, carrying much of the load.

The victory pushed the Bears to 3-1 and extended their record to 2-0 in games played without Williams.

Case Keenum took the opening snap against the Jets and handed off before Bagent entered, repeating a brief wrinkle from recent weeks. Keenum had started and won the Week 3 Monday night game against the Philadelphia Eagles after Bagent spent most of that week in concussion protocol.

Bagent, who signed as an undrafted free agent out of Shepherd in 2023, now has five career starts.

Across 14 games he has completed 129 of 192 passes for 1,239 yards, three touchdowns and seven interceptions, a 67.2 percent completion rate. His earlier starts all came in 2023, when he went 2-2 while replacing Justin Fields.

The Packers arrive at 2-2 after beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 17-14 on the road Sunday, with Jordan Love throwing two touchdown passes.

Through four weeks the Bears rank first in the NFL in total yards and first downs.

Williams’ next realistic window is the Week 6 trip to Atlanta, though nothing has been ruled in or out. Bagent’s supporting cast includes wide receivers Rome Odunze and Luther Burden plus tight end Colston Loveland.

The Bears follow the Packers game with a road date against the Falcons and a home game against the Patriots.
