The Los Angeles Rams are not planning to put a cap on Puka Nacua’s snaps when he returns Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter, even after the wide receiver sat out the team’s last two games with a hip and groin injury.

That stance is less a promise of a full workload than a refusal to predetermine one.

Los Angeles wants to judge Nacua’s conditioning once he is actually on the field in Philadelphia, and how he looks in the game could still shape how many plays he takes. The organization is simply not entering the afternoon with an artificial limit already drawn, according to those sources.

The injury that kept him out was described last week as primarily a groin problem that was cutting into his explosiveness.

Nacua, a two-time Pro Bowler, did not believe he could play with the same burst he has shown in the past. The Rams treated it as a short-term issue and did not expect it to require surgery.

He carries no injury designation for Sunday after practicing in full on Friday. Coach Sean McVay said Thursday, the day the Rams usually put their heaviest load on the field, that Nacua had looked sharp.

McVay was careful about what that means for the snap count.

He told reporters the team would have to be willing to navigate it, and he pointed to the confidence Los Angeles has in the receivers who absorbed meaningful work while Nacua was out.

He also said the receiver looked good, looked strong, and looked ready.

The tension in that answer is the whole story of the return. Nacua is the kind of target an offense is built around, and two missed games do not erase that.

At the same time, a groin that was already limiting his ability to separate is not the sort of problem a coaching staff ignores once the ball is live.

Philadelphia’s secondary will test whether the explosiveness is back; if it is not, the Rams have already signaled they are prepared to lean on the players who filled in.

Sunday, then, is less a ceremonial return than a live evaluation.

The plan is to let Nacua play without a predetermined ceiling. Whether the conditioning holds, and whether the burst that made him difficult to cover is available again, will decide how long that plan lasts.
