Right-hander Corbin Martin became a free agent Friday after the Chicago Cubs saw their season end in a National League Wild Card Series sweep by the San Diego Padres.
The Cubs dropped the series finale 4-1 on Wednesday at Petco Park. San Diego had opened the best-of-three with an 8-0 win the night before, ending Chicago’s year after an 89-73 regular season.
Martin, 30, elected free agency on Oct. 2, clearing the way for him to sign with any club.
MLB.com shared the news on Saturday: “RHP Corbin Martin elected free agency.”
He pitched in seven games for the Cubs early in the season after his contract was selected from Triple-A Iowa in mid-April. He finished 0-0 with a 10.80 ERA, one save and four strikeouts in five innings.
The club later designated him for assignment. He cleared waivers and was sent to the minors.
An injury later interrupted his season in the minors. He was moved from the 7-day injured list to the 60-day injured list in early August and did not return.
Martin was selected by the Houston Astros in the second round of the 2017 draft out of Texas A&M. He made his major league debut with Houston in 2019.
He later pitched for the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Baltimore Orioles before signing a minor league deal with the Cubs in January.
Across parts of five major league seasons, he is 2-5 with a 6.81 ERA in 41 games, including 10 starts, covering 80 2/3 innings.
Injuries have limited him at times, including Tommy John surgery that wiped out his 2020 season and a lat procedure that cost him all of 2023.
The Cubs finished second in the National League Central. They reached the postseason as a Wild Card team but managed only one run across the two games against San Diego.
Chicago last won the World Series in 2016. Martin’s brief stint this year produced a 2.00 WHIP and six earned runs allowed.
He is now free to pursue a new deal ahead of spring training. Clubs looking for bullpen depth could view the former second-round pick as a low-cost option despite the uneven results.
