Patriots Linked to Shocking Trade for Former First-Round WR

The New England Patriots’ wide receiver room has become one of the easier targets for second-guessing this season, and a report out of Arizona has only added fuel to that conversation.

After cutting Stefon Diggs, signing Romeo Doubs, trading a 2028 first-round pick for A.J. Brown, and later moving Kayshon Boutte, the Patriots have watched Brown miss time with an ankle sprain, Doubs fight drops, and Drake Maye operate without a consistent downfield threat.

Mack Hollins has made a few plays, but the offense has looked short of the explosive perimeter presence the front office thought it had assembled.

In a piece published Wednesday, Logan Ulrich of NFL Trade Rumors named New England among three plausible landing spots if the Arizona Cardinals decide to move Marvin Harrison Jr.

Ulrich argued that Harrison’s limited involvement in Mike LaFleur’s scheme, combined with a crowded skill-player group in Arizona, has made the former No. 4 overall pick look expendable. T

he Patriots, in that framing, could use Harrison as another outside receiver who wins jump balls and stretches the field, the same traits they chased when they acquired Brown.

From Foxborough’s perspective, the appeal is obvious and the risk is real. Harrison would arrive as a former top-10 talent whose trade price, according to the reporting around the league, might now sit closer to a Day 2 pick than to the first-round capital Arizona spent.

That is the kind of bet Mike Vrabel’s staff could justify if it believes a change of scenery, plus the Ohio State connections already in the building, would unlock more of the player scouts saw coming out of college.

Brown’s return from injured reserve will help, but it does not automatically settle the long-term questions about who lines up opposite him and how Maye finds consistent explosive plays.

The Patriots have also said they want to be careful with draft capital while they build around Maye and Christian Gonzalez. Spending a mid-round selection on Harrison would test that discipline.

It would also force the coaching staff to decide whether Harrison’s skill set, which is more traditional “X” receiver than after-the-catch gadget, actually fits what they want to run.

Arizona’s usage so far suggests scheme and confidence have both been problems. New England would be buying the chance that those problems are specific to the Cardinals, not baked into Harrison himself.

None of this means a deal is imminent. Arizona has not shown much appetite for selling young talent while it remains competitive, and New England would have to decide it is ready to admit the offseason receiver plan needs another swing.

Still, the rumor lands at a moment when Patriots fans are already asking whether the current group can give Maye enough help. Harrison would not erase those questions overnight. He would, however, give New England a high-upside answer it can point to if the present group continues to look thin on the perimeter.
