ESPN Cleveland said Wednesday the Browns “would probably welcome a deal at the right price” for one of their backup quarterbacks, citing ESPN senior NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler as the NFL’s trade market begins to take shape.
The station’s post, which asked fans whether Cleveland should consider moving a quarterback, quickly circulated among Browns followers as the team prepared for Thursday night’s AFC North home game against Pittsburgh.
Fowler’s assessment appeared in a Week 4 league notes package written with Dan Graziano. That report grouped Cleveland with Philadelphia and Pittsburgh as teams carrying four quarterbacks and likely open to a trade if the return is attractive.
The Browns’ quarterback room is crowded even by midseason standards. Deshaun Watson is the starter. Shedeur Sanders is the No. 2. Rookie Taylen Green is on the 53-man roster. Dillon Gabriel remains on injured reserve with a back injury and is designated for return.
Cleveland is 2-1 and tied with the Steelers, Bengals and Ravens atop the AFC North. Watson has completed 56 of 82 passes for 587 yards, five touchdowns and one interception, a 104.1 passer rating. He has also run for 105 yards.
Those numbers have not ended the debate over the franchise’s long-term plan at the position. Watson missed the 2025 season after tearing his Achilles twice. Sanders, a 2025 fifth-round pick out of Colorado, won the backup job after a training-camp competition that stretched into late August.
Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reported Sunday that the Browns have no plans to trade their No. 2 or No. 3 quarterbacks now or before the Nov. 10 trade deadline. Cabot wrote that Cleveland is “happy to have Sanders as their No. 2, with a chance of starting games this season.”
That local reporting sits beside Fowler’s broader market note. Six established starting quarterbacks have already gone down through three weeks, increasing demand for veterans and young backups who can step in immediately.
The New York Giants illustrated the point Monday by acquiring J.J. McCarthy from Minnesota for a 2027 fifth-round pick after Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury. Other clubs have already shopped names ranging from Mac Jones to Gardner Minshew.
Sanders has been mentioned in earlier speculation involving New York, in part because Giants coach John Harbaugh was with the Ravens last year when Baltimore was linked to Sanders in the draft. Cabot said those rumors have not changed Cleveland’s stance.
Gabriel is a more conventional trade chip if he is cleared to return. He was not in the starting mix this summer under coach Todd Monken but threw for 186 yards and three touchdowns on 12-of-15 passing in the preseason finale. Green, a sixth-round rookie from Arkansas, has no regular season experience.
Moving any of them would require the Browns to decide how much insurance they still want behind Watson. Cleveland has started multiple quarterbacks in each of the past three seasons and has treated depth at the position as a necessity rather than a luxury.
The Thursday night game adds another layer. A short week against a 2-1 rival leaves little time for roster experiments. A win would keep Cleveland in a four-way division tie. A loss would invite another round of quarterback questions, even if the starter remains Watson.
Social reaction to the ESPN Cleveland post was mixed and pointed. Some fans argued only a lower-roster arm should be moved. Others used the moment to renew calls for a larger reset at the position.
Any deal would still have to clear general manager Andrew Berry’s value threshold. The Browns have extra 2027 draft capital and have said they want a clearer answer this season on whether a franchise quarterback is already on the roster.
For now, the public message from Berea remains that Watson is the starter, Sanders is the backup, and the rest of the room is depth. Fowler’s comment did not contradict that hierarchy. It only suggested Cleveland might listen if another team is willing to pay.
The next five weeks until the deadline will test whether “the right price” ever arrives.
