Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has reached a rushing milestone previously reserved for three Hall of Fame running backs, the team announced as it prepared for Sunday’s AFC East game against the New England Patriots.
Allen has rushed for at least six touchdowns in each of the past nine seasons. The only other players in NFL history to do so are LaDainian Tomlinson, Marshall Faulk and Jim Brown.
The 30-year-old already has six rushing scores through three games this season. He scored twice on the ground in Week 1 at Houston, twice more against Detroit in the first game at the new Highmark Stadium, and twice again Sunday in a 24-16 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.
Those six rushing touchdowns give him 11 total scores this year. He has thrown five touchdown passes.
Allen now has 85 career rushing touchdowns, tying former Bills running back Marshawn Lynch for 17th on the NFL’s all-time list. He is the career leader among quarterbacks.
Buffalo is 3-0 for the third straight season. A win over the 1-2 Patriots would give the Bills a three-game lead in the division.
Allen’s Week 3 outing was one of his sloppiest in years. He completed 16 of 26 passes for 204 yards with two interceptions and lost a fumble. The Bills committed five turnovers and 10 penalties yet still won.
He credited the defense afterward.
“Sitting there to be tied at halftime felt like a dream, to be honest,” Allen said. “Our defense played fantastic. It’s not a game that you expect to win, but we’ll take them any way we can get them.”
Allen is tied with Baltimore’s Derrick Henry for the league lead in rushing touchdowns. Henry has needed far more carries to reach the same total.
Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reported Allen’s MVP odds shortened even after the turnover-filled game against the Chargers. Allen moved from +500 to +260 to win his second MVP award. San Francisco’s Brock Purdy sits second at +425.
Allen signed a six-year, $330 million extension in 2025 that runs through 2030. He is averaging $55 million per year.
Through three games he has 786 passing yards, a 104.1 passer rating, 114 rushing yards and those six rushing scores. He has accounted for 11 of Buffalo’s offensive touchdowns.
Only three other players have opened a season with at least two rushing touchdowns in each of the first three games: Jim Brown in 1958, Stephen Davis in 1999 and Priest Holmes in 2003. Allen is the first quarterback to do it.
The Bills host New England on Sunday. Allen has been the engine of Buffalo’s offense for nearly a decade, blending power running near the goal line with a strong arm.
His consistency on the ground has now placed him in a statistical group that includes three of the most productive runners the league has ever seen.
