The New York Yankees have made their lineup official for Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series against the Boston Red Sox, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. is notably absent from the starting nine, via Underdog MLB.

With Boston sending left-hander Payton Tolle to the mound Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium, Yankees manager Aaron Boone opted to go with Anthony Volpe at second base instead of Chisholm.

Volpe will bat seventh in the postseason opener, while Chisholm will begin the game on the bench.

The decision comes after Chisholm had indicated that he expected to be in the lineup for Game 1.

The 28-year-old had also acknowledged that he would be disappointed if he was left out, saying, “Who wouldn’t be?” when asked whether he would be upset about not starting.

The matchup against Tolle appears to have played a significant role in the Yankees’ decision. Chisholm, a left-handed hitter, posted a .218 batting average against left-handed pitching during the regular season.

His .650 OPS against southpaws also represented a significant split for the Yankees to consider in a win-or-go-home postseason environment.

Volpe, meanwhile, gives New York a right-handed option against Tolle. The move also echoes last season, when Chisholm was left out of the Yankees’ starting lineup for Game 1 of the Wild Card Series against Boston when the Red Sox started left-hander Garrett Crochet.

Chisholm’s absence does not mean he will be an afterthought throughout the game. His speed, athleticism and ability to impact a game in multiple ways make him a potentially important weapon off the bench.

If the Yankees need a left-handed bat later in the game or want to use Chisholm’s speed on the bases, he could still play a significant role.

The Yankees will instead open Game 1 with Paul Goldschmidt at first base, Ben Rice at designated hitter, Heliot Ramos in right field, Cody Bellinger in left, George Lombard Jr. at shortstop, Amed Rosario at third, Volpe at second, Spencer Jones in center and Austin Wells behind the plate.

Cam Schlittler will take the mound for New York against Tolle, with the Yankees looking to take the first step toward advancing in a best-of-three series against their longtime rivals.

For Chisholm, the focus now shifts to being ready when his opportunity arrives.

In a postseason series where one swing, stolen base or defensive play can change the game, his role may begin on the bench—but it does not necessarily end there.
