Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni accepted full blame Monday night after his team was routed 27-7 by the Chicago Bears and third-string quarterback Case Keenum on national television.
Sirianni told reporters the defeat was a collective failure that began with the coaching staff.
“We all have to own that loss,” Sirianni said. “I don’t think anybody coached well, I don’t think anyone played well, it was a true team loss… That ultimately starts and ends with me. Everything that’s on that field is my responsibility, I didn’t do a good enough job.”
The Eagles dropped to 2-1 and absorbed their first loss of the season at Soldier Field. Chicago improved to 2-1.
Keenum, 38, made his first regular-season start since December 2023 after starter Caleb Williams was sidelined by a hamstring injury. He completed 24 of 34 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns, added a one-yard rushing score and finished with a 110.8 passer rating.
The Bears scored on their opening drive, an 11-play, 66-yard march capped by an 8-yard shovel pass from Keenum to Luther Burden III. Philadelphia answered just before halftime when Jalen Hurts sneaked in from the 1-yard line after a 30-yard completion to DeVonta Smith, trimming the deficit to 10-7.
Hurts left briefly in the second quarter after a late hit by linebacker D’Marco Jackson and was evaluated for a concussion. He was cleared to return, but backup Andy Dalton threw an interception from the 2-yard line during the evaluation. Hurts finished 16 of 25 for 153 yards with one interception.
Philadelphia committed three turnovers and recorded none for the third consecutive game. The Eagles also drew 10 penalties for 61 yards and converted just two of nine third downs. Chicago held the ball for 36 minutes, 53 seconds and outgained the visitors 375 yards to 248.
The offense stalled after halftime. Three consecutive three-and-outs followed, including a delay-of-game penalty on fourth-and-1. Hurts later threw an interception to former Eagle T.J. Edwards on fourth-and-5. Keenum then hit Kalif Raymond for a 41-yard touchdown and later scored on a quarterback sneak to make it 27-7.
Saquon Barkley rushed 15 times for 82 yards. Smith caught six passes for 65 yards. Raymond finished with six receptions for 90 yards and a score for Chicago.
The loss left the Eagles tied with the New York Giants atop the NFC East. Philadelphia hosts the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.
Sirianni has guided the Eagles to a Super Bowl title and consistent playoff appearances, but the one-sided defeat to a backup quarterback immediately drew sharp criticism from local reporters who called it one of the most embarrassing results of his tenure.
Sirianni also addressed his visible frustration on the sideline after the late hit on Hurts, saying doctors had to protect the quarterback and that the team still needed to score from the 1-yard line regardless of who was under center.
The Eagles entered the game as 3.5-point favorites. They now have seven days to correct the execution problems that produced three turnovers, poor third-down efficiency and a lopsided time-of-possession battle.
