The Cleveland Browns entered Sunday’s home opener against the Carolina Panthers with a quarterback picture that looked settled on paper and still unfinished in practice.
Deshaun Watson remained the starter. Shedeur Sanders stayed next in line. Rookie Taylen Green was listed among the inactives and reserved for emergency duty only, the team announced shortly before the game.
That designation matters more than a simple depth-chart formality. Under the NFL’s emergency quarterback rule, Green can enter the game only if both Watson and Sanders are unavailable because of injury or disqualification.
Cleveland cannot use him in a planned package or as a midgame change of scenery if the offense stalls. The choice followed the team’s unofficial Week 3 depth chart and kept the same order the Browns have used through the first three weeks of the season.
Watson’s hold on the job tightened after last week’s rebound against Tampa Bay. After a disappointing opener against Jacksonville, he completed 24 of 30 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns in a 23-19 win, helping Cleveland erase a 10-point deficit.
The performance gave coach Todd Monken a reason to stay with the veteran rather than turn immediately to Sanders. Monken later said Watson had his best week of practice heading into the Panthers game and described him as a player still growing into the system, even if outside observers no longer see him that way.
Sanders, who lost the starting competition in camp, remains the most realistic alternative if Monken decides a change is necessary. Being active does not guarantee snaps.
His assignment for now is to stay ready while Watson tries to string together consistent outings.
One productive afternoon against Tampa Bay does not close the debate in Cleveland, where Watson’s reception from the home crowd has already been a talking point.
The home opener therefore carries more weight than a typical Week 3 date.
Another efficient performance would give Monken evidence that the offense is settling under his direction. A sloppy afternoon would put Sanders back at the center of the conversation. Green’s role is narrower still: he is insurance, not a planned solution.
For a franchise still trying to stabilize its most important position, Sunday’s inactive list was less a surprise than a statement of order. Watson gets another chance. Sanders waits.
Green stays on the sideline unless circumstances force Cleveland’s hand.
The Browns can live with that arrangement for one more week. Whether it lasts beyond that depends on what happens once the ball is snapped.
