The Philadelphia Phillies are still fighting for a playoff berth with two days left in the regular season, and the margin for error has all but disappeared.
After dropping Friday night’s series opener to the Tampa Bay Rays, Philadelphia holds a one-game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks for the National League’s final Wild Card spot.
Arizona also owns the tiebreaker, so Saturday’s contest at Citizens Bank Park — and possibly Sunday’s finale — could decide whether the Phillies play into October.
The club is already shorthanded. Infielder Luis Arraez is unavailable after suffering an ankle injury earlier in the week, removing one of the league’s most reliable contact hitters from the lineup.
That absence, however, also opened the door for a defensive shuffle that interim manager Don Mattingly announced before Saturday’s game.
Mattingly is moving Bryce Harper from right field back to first base, a position Harper has occupied for stretches of his Phillies tenure, via Underdog MLB.
Alec Bohm shifts to third base and Bryson Stott takes over at second. Kyle Schwarber remains the designated hitter and Trea Turner stays at shortstop. Bryan De La Cruz will patrol right field in Harper’s place.
The full batting order runs Turner, Schwarber, Harper, Bohm, Stott, De La Cruz, Brandon Marsh in left, J.T. Realmuto behind the plate, and J.P. Crawford in center, with Aaron Nola on the mound.
Philadelphia enters the day at 87-73 and has gone 4-6 over its last ten games. Harper himself has been quiet lately, going 3-for-7 across the previous two contests.
For the season, he is hitting .270 with 153 hits, 28 home runs and 86 RBIs, slugging .485 with an .867 OPS.
Those numbers still make him the club’s most dangerous bat, and returning him to first base is meant to keep that production in the lineup while tightening the infield around him.
The move is as much about flexibility as it is about personnel. With Arraez sidelined, Mattingly can deploy his remaining regulars in the alignments he trusts most for a must-win afternoon.
Whether the defensive realignment pays off will be measured against a Rays team that already took the first game of the series and a Diamondbacks club watching every result from the West. Two days remain.
The Phillies have chosen to meet them with Harper at first and the rest of the infield rearranged around him.
