Chicago Bears running back Kyle Monangai gave the team a lift on Friday when he practiced as a full participant after spending the first two days of the week limited by a hamstring injury.
His game status for Monday night remains unspecified, but the upgrade is a promising sign as the Bears prepare to host the Philadelphia Eagles.
The timing could hardly be better. Chicago may have to navigate the game without starting quarterback Caleb Williams, while Tyson Bagent is still in the concussion protocol after relieving Williams in last week’s loss to Minnesota.
All indications point to Case Keenum taking the snaps, which means the Bears will lean on every reliable piece of their offense.
A healthy Monangai would be one of those pieces.
The second-year back has been among Chicago’s most efficient offensive players through two weeks. He opened the season with 100 rushing yards and a touchdown on only 10 carries in a 59-37 win over Carolina, highlighted by a 61-yard scoring run.
That night, he and D’Andre Swift both topped 100 yards, the first time two Bears running backs had done so in a season opener since 1980.
Against Minnesota, he added 47 yards on another 10 carries, leaving him with 147 yards on 20 attempts and a 7.4-yard average. He has also caught four passes for 35 yards and picked up five first downs.
That production matters if Chicago has to simplify its attack against Philadelphia. A back who can create chunk plays and stay on schedule gives whoever is under center another way to move the chains.
Swift, dealing with an ankle and knee issue, was also listed as a full participant Friday, raising the possibility that both featured backs will be available.
The Bears will not pile up 291 rushing yards every week the way they did against Carolina, but the two-back look still gives the coaching staff options when the quarterback situation is unsettled.
Monangai still has to get through the weekend without a setback, and a full practice does not guarantee he will play. Even so, Friday marked a clear step forward.
After an offense that managed only three points in Minnesota, having both Swift and Monangai ready would give Chicago a better chance to establish the run.
With uncertainty at quarterback, that ground game could become the most important part of the Week 3 plan.
