The Philadelphia Phillies announced three minor league roster moves Monday ahead of a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers at Citizens Bank Park.
The Double-A Reading Fightin Phils activated right-hander Reese Dutton from the development list and transferred right-hander Gage Wood to the development list. Catcher Luis Caicuto was assigned to Reading from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
The series opens Tuesday at 6:40 p.m. EDT. The Phillies enter the set at 86-70, six games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East. Philadelphia sits even with or just behind other clubs in the National League wild-card race with six games remaining after this series.
Milwaukee arrives at 98-58 with the best record in baseball after setting a franchise mark with its 98th win Sunday, a 3-0 victory over Baltimore that completed a sweep. The Brewers have already clinched a fourth straight NL Central title.
Dutton, 25, signed a minor league deal with Philadelphia in July 2024 after pitching at Kansas. He spent time at Single-A and High-A in 2025 before splitting 2026 between High-A Jersey Shore and Double-A Reading.
At High-A this season he posted a 3.39 ERA with 72 strikeouts in 82 1/3 innings. The jump to Double-A has been harder, with an 8.22 ERA, 11 strikeouts and 18 walks in 23 innings. His career minor league line stands at 4.12 ERA with 173 strikeouts in 216 1/3 innings.
Wood, 22, was Philadelphia’s first-round pick (26th overall) in the 2025 draft out of Arkansas. He made one Single-A appearance in 2025 and has worked at both Single-A and Double-A this year.
He recorded a 3.42 ERA over 26 1/3 innings at Single-A Clearwater. At Reading he has a 4.72 ERA in 68 2/3 innings with 99 strikeouts. MLB Pipeline ranks him the Phillies’ top prospect and No. 30 overall in baseball.
Caicuto, 23, has played 52 games at High-A and 11 at Double-A in 2026. Combined he is hitting .249/.358/.406 with six home runs and 37 RBIs in 63 games, plus one Triple-A appearance.
Philadelphia selected him from Arizona in the minor league phase of the 2023 Rule 5 draft. His career minor league slash line is .254/.352/.340 with seven homers and 80 RBIs in 205 games.
Development-list placements commonly give young pitchers extra rest late in the year. Wood’s move comes after a heavy Double-A workload and a Futures Game appearance in July.
Zack Wheeler (13-5, 2.99 ERA) is lined up to start Tuesday opposite Milwaukee’s Dustin May. The Phillies posted a 7-2 win at the Mets on Sunday, with Cristopher Sánchez earning his major league-leading 18th victory.
Philadelphia has scored 697 runs this season while hitting .241 as a team. The Brewers have scored 802 runs and own a 3.54 team ERA.
The Phillies’ farm system continues to shuffle pieces as the big-league club tries to lock down a playoff spot. Attendance at Citizens Bank Park has topped 2.99 million, third in the National League.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy said after Sunday’s win: “We haven’t had these streaks of greatness. We haven’t put it all together.” Milwaukee still holds a two-game edge over the Dodgers for the NL’s best record.
Philadelphia will host Tampa Bay after the Brewers series. Both clubs are preparing for October baseball, though only Milwaukee has already punched its ticket.
