Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb delivered one of the more complete receiving performances of the young NFL season on Sunday, and the league’s response arrived almost as quickly as the highlights.
After the Cowboys wideout hauled in eight passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns against Washington, league officials summoned him for a drug test before he had even left AT&T Stadium, via insider Patrik Walker.
The request is not unusual. The NFL routinely tests players after standout statistical games, a policy that still catches fans off guard when it happens in real time.
Walker captured video of Lamb walking through the stadium tunnels toward the testing area shortly after the final whistle. Lamb had already piled up nearly 100 receiving yards by halftime and later caught the touchdown that gave Dak Prescott the franchise record for career passing scores.
Prescott finished 26 of 31 for 279 yards and four touchdowns. The scoring throw to Lamb was the 249th of his career, moving him past Tony Romo.
Speaking after the game, Prescott described the moment as both humbling and expected. He said the game has always given him peace and that records are meant to be broken by players who stay healthy and productive long enough. In his view, he is still early in that process.
The outing marked a clear step forward for Dallas after a quieter Week 1 against the Giants, when the offense was limited by a defense that could not get off the field.
An improved defensive effort this week allowed Prescott and Lamb to operate more freely. Lamb now has three touchdowns through two games.
That total already matches his entire 2025 output, a season shortened and hampered by injuries in which he still managed 75 receptions and 1,077 yards.
Those numbers would satisfy most receivers. For Lamb they represented a relative dip after years of higher production.
The early return to the end zone this fall suggests the previous campaign was more aberration than new normal.
He remains the focal point of an offense that looked sharper and more decisive on Sunday, even as the familiar post-game ritual of league testing followed him out of the locker room.
The combination of a career milestone for the quarterback and a statement game from the receiver gave Cowboys fans reason for optimism.
It also served as another reminder that exceptional performances in the NFL rarely pass without official notice, even when the notice arrives in the form of a sample cup rather than a trophy.
