The Denver Broncos have a “high level of confidence and comfort” in Davis Webb as their offensive playcaller, a team source told Adam Schefter of ESPN on Sunday.
Webb’s debut as offensive coordinator went badly. Denver managed 176 yards from scrimmage in a 31-10 loss at Kansas City on Monday.
Coach Sean Payton spread the blame.
“I think that game didn’t go for any of us as we would’ve hoped,” Payton said Thursday. “Right? I mean, I said in the meeting this morning: There was dirt on a ton of people’s hands, starting with me.
“So we’ve got to learn from that,” Payton continued. “It’s a quick turnaround, you can’t get to the next game quick enough, and I’m sure it’s the same way for [Webb].”
Denver promoted Webb from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator in February.
He had other options. Webb interviewed for head coaching jobs with the Las Vegas Raiders, Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens this past offseason, and he had chances to become an offensive coordinator elsewhere, according to sources.
Bo Nix fumbled three times at Kansas City and lost one. He also threw an interception and was sacked a career-high four times.
When asked Thursday what the offense needed to do to make things easier on Webb, the third-year quarterback kept it short.
“Get first downs, score points,” Nix said.
The Broncos host the Jacksonville Jaguars at 4:05 p.m. ET Sunday at Empower Field at Mile High.
They will likely be without running back RJ Harvey, who is unlikely to play with a hamstring injury. Harvey led Denver’s backfield in snaps at Kansas City.
The Jaguars were the only team to win in Denver during the 2025 regular season. Their 34-20 victory in Week 16 ended the Broncos’ 11-game winning streak. Trevor Lawrence completed 23 of 36 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns in that game and ran for another score.
Jacksonville arrives at 1-0 after beating the Cleveland Browns 34-10. Lawrence went 18-of-23 for 245 yards and four touchdowns in the opener. The Jaguars have won nine straight regular-season games, the longest active streak in the league.
Neither Payton nor the organization has signaled any change to the play-calling arrangement.
