The Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets entered Saturday’s series finale with the kind of late-September tension that defines a crowded National League Wild Card picture.

After taking the opener 3-0 on Thursday and dropping Friday’s contest 6-3, the Phillies turned to interim manager Don Mattingly for a lineup tweak ahead of the 4:10 p.m. ET first pitch in Queens.

Mattingly’s most notable adjustment involved All-Star outfielder Brandon Marsh.

The club had kept Marsh on the bench Friday against a left-handed starter, continuing a platoon pattern that has defined parts of his season.

On Saturday he returned to the starting nine, sliding into left field and occupying the seventh spot in the order, via Underdog MLB.

The top of the lineup stayed intact, with Kyle Schwarber at designated hitter, Trea Turner at shortstop, and Bryce Harper in right field. Luis Arraez, Alec Bohm, and Bryson Stott filled the middle of the order, J.T. Realmuto caught, and J.P. Crawford started in center field behind starter Andrew Painter.

The decision reflects both Marsh’s established role and the best season of his six-year major-league career. Named an All-Star for the first time, he even started the Midsummer Classic in the outfield.

Through 147 games and 505 at-bats, he has posted a .261 average, 69 runs, 132 hits, 17 home runs, and 58 RBIs, slugging .408 with a .714 OPS.

Those numbers have given Mattingly a productive option when the matchup favors him, even as the club continues to manage his playing time against certain left-handers.

Context around the move is larger than one afternoon in New York. Philadelphia sits at 85-69 with eight games remaining, locked in a three-way tie with the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres for the National League Wild Card spots.

The team that finishes first among them will host a best-of-three Wild Card series; the other two will travel.

Every remaining game therefore carries extra weight, and small lineup choices—such as when and where to deploy Marsh—can influence both the standings and the club’s postseason positioning.

Marsh’s return to left field on Saturday is not a dramatic overhaul so much as a practical, matchup-driven decision by a manager navigating the final stretch of a tight race.

For a Phillies team that has already shown it can win series against quality competition, the hope is that familiar faces in familiar spots will produce another productive afternoon and keep the club in control of its own October fate.
