Chargers Get Major Injury Update on Star Receiver Ahead of Raiders Matchup

The Los Angeles Chargers listed Ladd McConkey as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders because of a rib injury, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.

The designation gives the receiver a path back after a week without a full practice.

Schefter reported Thursday that McConkey had missed two straight practices, which made his availability unlikely.

ESPN’s Kris Rhim reported that McConkey worked on a side field with a trainer Thursday rather than practicing with the team.

McConkey was hurt late in the third quarter of Sunday’s 26-14 loss to Arizona, taking a hard hit on a throw over the middle. He was evaluated and did not return.

Jim Harbaugh called him day-to-day Monday.

Before leaving, McConkey caught five of seven targets for 82 yards and scored the Chargers’ only receiving touchdown, an 8-yard pass from Justin Herbert. He led the team in catches, targets and yards.

He played 27 of a possible 55 offensive snaps. Arizona outscored Los Angeles 10-0 in the fourth quarter after he left.

McConkey lined up in the slot on 70 percent of his snaps. Derius Davis replaced him there and saw one target, a 54-yard throw from Herbert into double coverage that fell incomplete.

Tre Harris and Quentin Johnston took the most pass snaps among Chargers receivers in Week 1, with 31 and 30. Harris had six targets and Johnston five.

Tight ends David Njoku and Oronde Gadsden II were efficient in limited work.

The receiver room is thin behind McConkey. KeAndre Lambert-Smith is on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Los Angeles added Marquez Valdes-Scantling to the practice squad this week.

McConkey was not the only Charger held out Thursday. Elijah Molden (hamstring), Trey Pipkins III (knee), Dalvin Tomlinson (hamstring, rest) and Bud Dupree (rest) also sat. Teair Tart (ankle) and Deane Leonard (abdomen) were limited, while Khalil Mack, Akheem Mesidor (calf) and Davis (calf) were full participants.

Los Angeles was a 9.5-point favorite in the opener and lost as Arizona ran 72 plays to the Chargers’ 51.

The Chargers host the Raiders at SoFi Stadium on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. ET.
