Tyreek Hill remains fond of the Kansas City Chiefs, and an in-season signing would make sense for both sides, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said Wednesday.
Fowler said Hill should be closer to playing around October.
Hill, 32, is a free agent. The Miami Dolphins released him this offseason, 11 months after he dislocated his knee in Week 4 of the 2025 season against the New York Jets.
Doctors have recommended Hill wait until October before attempting his comeback, agent Drew Rosenhaus said on “The Pat McAfee Show” last week. Rosenhaus said there is a lot of interest in Hill but that the priority is making sure he is fully healthy.
ESPN’s Nate Taylor has reported that the Chiefs are expected to monitor Hill’s recovery. As of now, Kansas City is the only team publicly connected to him.
Kansas City drafted Hill in the fifth round in 2016. He spent six seasons with the Chiefs and won a Super Bowl with them before they traded him to Miami in March 2022.
His first two years in Miami were the best of his career. Hill topped 1,700 receiving yards in both 2022 and 2023 and was a first-team All-Pro each season.
The drop-off came in 2024. Hill caught 81 passes for 959 yards and six touchdowns while playing through a torn ligament in his wrist. Miami’s quarterback situation was unsettled that year after Tua Tagovailoa’s concussion.
The Chiefs may not need him yet.
Kansas City beat the Denver Broncos 31-10 on Monday night in Week 1. Kenneth Walker III ran for 173 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, and Patrick Mahomes threw for 184 yards and two touchdowns.
Receiver depth is thinner. Tyquan Thornton, the Chiefs’ third wideout, did not record a stat in the opener. Fulman wrote that signing a player coming off a potentially career-ending injury carries obvious risk, but that Kansas City’s lack of options makes Hill worth the gamble.
The Chiefs have given no public indication of their interest.
Miami has moved on at receiver. The Dolphins released Hill and traded Jaylen Waddle to the Denver Broncos, then drafted three receivers.
Third-round pick Caleb Douglas caught five passes for 94 yards in Sunday’s 27-13 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. That set a franchise record for a Dolphins rookie in his debut and tied Hill’s 2022 mark for the most receiving yards by any player in his first game with Miami.
Should Hill’s timeline hold, he would not be available for the Chiefs’ trip to Miami.
Kansas City hosts the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. The Chiefs visit the Dolphins for Miami’s home opener at Hard Rock Stadium on Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. ET.
