One name that has surfaced in recent reports is Teruaki Sato, a 27-year-old power hitter from Japan whose potential arrival via the posting system has drawn interest from several major league clubs.
According to New York Post columnist Jon Heyman, the Yankees sit among a group of teams, including the Mets, Dodgers, and Phillies, that have been linked to Sato should the Hanshin Tigers star elect to enter the posting process.
The left-handed slugger currently plays primarily at third base and in the outfield, though evaluators see the possibility of him developing into a productive first baseman as well. That positional flexibility could make him an appealing fit for clubs seeking both offense and defensive versatility.
Sato has built an impressive résumé in Nippon Professional Baseball since debuting with the Tigers in 2021. He established himself as one of the Central League’s premier hitters and captured MVP honors in 2025 after launching 40 home runs and posting a .924 OPS.
His production has remained strong into the current season, where he is batting .319 with a .407 on-base percentage and .619 slugging mark while adding another 26 home runs across roughly 100 games. Over the past two campaigns he has combined for 66 long balls, underscoring the consistent power that has made him a standout.
Beyond his domestic success, Sato has represented Team Japan on the international stage, including the World Baseball Classic, where he shared the diamond with stars such as Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Seiya Suzuki, Munetaka Murakami, and Kazuma Okamoto.
That experience against high-level competition offers further evidence of his readiness for the major league environment.
Should Sato be posted, he would enter a 45-day negotiating window with interested MLB teams.
Reaching an agreement within that period would clear the path for him to join a new club; failing to do so would send him back to Japan with eligibility delayed until the following offseason.
