Shedeur Sanders offered a straightforward take on the Cleveland Browns’ ongoing quarterback competition, stressing that the focus stays on winning rather than personal rivalries.
The second-year quarterback sat down recently with former Browns signal-caller Bernie Kosar and addressed the situation involving himself and Deshaun Watson. Both players have taken snaps throughout the offseason program and training camp as the team evaluates who will lead the offense in 2026.
Sanders made clear that the atmosphere inside the quarterback room remains positive and free of unnecessary tension.
“We like the hard coaching and we like all that stuff because we know it’s coming from a place of wanting us to be great. Everybody’s goal is aligned here. That’s why we don’t have the petty quarterback battles internally,” Sanders said.
That comment reflected a shared mindset between the two passers. Sanders indicated both he and Watson simply want to help the Browns succeed on the field, putting individual competition secondary to team results. The absence of pettiness has allowed the group to concentrate on improving together under the coaching staff’s guidance.
New head coach Todd Monken entered the summer hoping to settle the starter question before training camp began. That timeline has stretched as both quarterbacks have shown strong moments in practices and workouts. The decision could now stretch into the regular season, with the first game scheduled for Sept. 13 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Monken confirmed he has not yet chosen who will start the preseason opener against the Chicago Bears.
“I have not,” Monken said. “They’re each going to start a game. How do I want it, that’s something we’re working through. We’re going to go through this week, and next week we’ll have to decide when we practice against the Bills, because you’re not going to give just one practice, you’re not going to give one of the quarterbacks the ones, you’re going to have to rotate those guys some in the preseason practices.”
The coach expects clearer answers after the first two exhibition contests.
“As long as we’re still sharing reps, it’s a competition,” Monken said. “After those two games, we’ll be closer to at least having a better idea.”
Monken has repeatedly highlighted the strides Sanders has made since last season. The young quarterback appeared in seven games as a rookie, finishing with a 3-4 record while throwing for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Those numbers reflected the challenges of adjusting to the NFL, yet coaches have noticed marked improvement in his decision-making and command of the offense.
“I think Shedeur’s come miles, in terms of his progressions, getting the ball out, his understanding of concepts,” Monken said. “I think he’s really, really come a long way.”
Watson, who has dealt with injury setbacks in recent years, continues to push for the starting role as well. The competition has stayed respectful, according to Sanders, because both players understand the bigger picture of preparing the team for success. Hard coaching from the staff has been welcomed rather than resisted, reinforcing the idea that everyone is pulling in the same direction.
As practices continue and the preseason schedule approaches, the Browns will keep rotating the quarterbacks to gather as much information as possible. Monken’s plan calls for each to start at least one exhibition game, ensuring both receive meaningful opportunities to perform under game-like conditions.
The process has created an intriguing storyline for a franchise that has searched for consistent quarterback play in recent seasons. Sanders’ comments suggest the internal dynamic remains healthy even as the external narrative focuses on who will ultimately win the job.
