Gerrit Cole reached a major franchise milestone Saturday afternoon, becoming the fastest pitcher in New York Yankees history to record 1,000 strikeouts while wearing the pinstripes.
The right-hander needed just 139 games to hit the mark, the fewest of any Yankees pitcher to get there. He is the 13th arm in franchise history to reach the four-digit total.
Cole notched the milestone punchout in the fifth inning against the Atlanta Braves at Yankee Stadium. It came as he worked out of a jam after the visitors had pushed across a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead.
The 35-year-old finished the day with nine strikeouts over seven innings. He allowed six hits and two runs without issuing a walk. His fastball still touched the upper 90s at times, and he generated swings and misses with his usual mix of high heat and sharp breaking pitches.
Cole entered the contest needing a handful of strikeouts to join the exclusive group. He wasted little time building toward the total, recording a pair in the early innings before the fifth-inning sequence sealed the personal achievement.

His overall career totals now sit at more than 2,300 strikeouts across stops with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Astros and Yankees. The consistency of missing bats has defined much of his prime.
Reaching 1,000 strikeouts with one club places Cole alongside a short list of Yankees greats. Previous members of that group include several Hall of Famers and long-time franchise standouts who spent many seasons in New York.
The pace at which Cole got there stands out even more. Earlier Yankees pitchers who hit the mark generally needed significantly more appearances. The modern emphasis on strikeouts and Cole’s own high-volume approach helped accelerate the timeline.
Manager Aaron Boone and the coaching staff have monitored Cole’s workload closely this season. The focus remains on keeping him healthy for the stretch run and potential postseason play.
Cole’s next scheduled start comes later this week. The Yankees will look for him to build on Saturday’s solid effort as they continue navigating the second half of the schedule.
The milestone adds another line to an already impressive resume for the California native. At an age when many power pitchers begin to decline, Cole continues producing the kind of results that first made him a high draft pick more than a decade ago.
