Former New York Yankees reliever Dennis Santana has signed a minor-league contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks, giving the veteran right-hander another opportunity to revive his career after a difficult stretch with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Santana was designated for assignment by the Pirates late last month and subsequently elected free agency. The Diamondbacks, looking to add depth to a bullpen that has shown inconsistency at times, took a low-risk chance on the 6-foot-2 pitcher. If he performs well in the minors, a call-up before the season ends remains possible.
This season with Pittsburgh proved challenging. Santana finished with a 2-5 record, a 6.05 ERA, and 37 strikeouts across 44 appearances.
The results marked a clear step back from his stronger showings in previous years with the club, including a solid 2024 campaign and an effective stretch that once positioned him as a key late-inning option.
His path to this point included a brief stint with the Yankees in 2024. After signing a minor league deal the previous December, he earned a major league promotion in April but struggled to a 6.26 ERA in 23 appearances before being designated for assignment.
The Pirates claimed him off waivers, and he enjoyed periods of success there before this year’s downturn.
Beyond the numbers, Santana’s recent seasons have included notable off-field and on-field controversies.
Last season, while with the Pirates, he received a suspension after an altercation with a fan during a game in Detroit. Video showed him exchanging words and then leaping from the bullpen area in an attempt to swipe at a spectator seated nearby.
Major League Baseball initially handed down a four-game ban and an undisclosed fine for aggressive conduct; after an appeal, the suspension was reduced to three games, which he served. Santana later described the fan as having crossed a line repeatedly, while expressing regret over his reaction.
This year brought another heated moment when Santana played a central role in a bench-clearing incident against his former team, the Yankees.
During a midsummer game at Yankee Stadium, he took exception to José Caballero’s pitch-clock tactics. After inducing an inning-ending double play, Santana directed words and gestures toward Caballero, prompting both benches and bullpens to empty.
Teammates restrained the pitcher, and no punches were thrown, but the episode highlighted the intensity that sometimes surfaces in his approach.
Now with the Diamondbacks organization, Santana will aim to put recent struggles and distractions behind him.
At this stage of his career, consistent performance in the minors could still open a path back to the majors, offering a chance to demonstrate the value he has shown in stronger stretches of his nine-year big-league journey.
