The Minnesota Vikings entered training camp with an open quarterback competition that has already produced some unexpected developments.
Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy have both been working for the Week 1 starting role, yet early indications suggest the battle may not unfold the way many expected after Minnesota signed Murray this offseason.
McCarthy arrived in the Twin Cities as the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 draft, carrying the hope that he would eventually become the franchise’s long-term answer under center. His 2025 season, however, did little to solidify that vision.
Limited by injuries, the young quarterback appeared in only 10 games, completing 57.6 percent of his passes for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while adding 181 rushing yards and four scores on the ground.
Those numbers left the Vikings searching for more reliable production, prompting the addition of Murray.
Now the competition has taken another turn. Reports from camp indicate that veteran Carson Wentz has been operating as the primary option with the second-team offense.
Vikings insider Matthew Coller of Purple Insider framed the situation bluntly when discussing McCarthy’s status as the potential backup.
“That’s really up to J.J. [McCarthy],” Coller said. “I mean if J.J. continues to play in camp the exact same way he has for the first four days then there’s a good chance Carson Wentz will be the backup.”
The observation carries weight. If Murray locks down the starting job and Wentz earns the primary reserve role, McCarthy’s place on the roster becomes far less certain.
A trade could surface as a realistic possibility once the depth chart settles. Head coach Kevin O’Connell and the coaching staff still have time to evaluate all three quarterbacks before making final decisions, yet the early signals have tilted toward Murray as the frontrunner and raised legitimate questions about McCarthy’s immediate future in Minnesota.
For a player once viewed as the cornerstone of the franchise’s next era, the current training-camp reality represents a sharp and troubling shift.
How McCarthy responds over the remaining practices and preseason games will likely determine whether he remains part of the Vikings’ plans or begins looking for a fresh opportunity elsewhere.
