The Chicago Cubs bolstered their starting rotation Sunday by acquiring right-hander Kevin Gausman from the Toronto Blue Jays in a trade that sent two minor league prospects the other way.
Reports confirmed the deal involves Gausman heading to the Cubs while the Blue Jays receive infielder Ty Southisene and outfielder Brett Bateman. Southisene ranked as the Cubs’ No. 13 prospect, and Bateman checked in at No. 21 in the organization’s rankings.
Gausman, a 35-year-old two-time All-Star, enters the final season of his contract and will become a free agent this winter. The move gives the Cubs a veteran arm for the remainder of the 2026 campaign as they push for a postseason berth.
The right-hander has logged more than 170 innings in each of the past five seasons, establishing himself as one of baseball’s more durable starters. This year with Toronto, he posted a 4.38 ERA through 23 starts, though his fielding-independent pitching sat at a stronger 3.51.
Gausman is known for his splitter, a pitch that has generated weak contact and swing-and-miss results throughout his career. Cubs officials believe that offering will play well in the National League Central, where the team has dealt with rotation inconsistencies and injuries.
Chicago has hovered near the top of the division for much of the season but has sought reinforcements on the mound ahead of the trade deadline. Adding Gausman addresses part of that need without committing long-term salary beyond the current year.
The Blue Jays, meanwhile, appear to be shifting into seller mode after a disappointing campaign that has left them outside the American League playoff picture. Shipping out Gausman allows Toronto to acquire younger talent while shedding the remaining portion of his $23 million salary.
Southisene and Bateman represent solid returns for a rental pitcher. Both players had shown promise in the Cubs’ farm system and now give the Blue Jays additional depth for their rebuilding efforts.
Gausman previously drew interest from the Cubs years earlier before he signed his multiyear deal with Toronto prior to the 2022 season. His track record includes strong postseason performances with a career ERA under 4.00 in October.
The trade does not preclude the Cubs from making further moves before the deadline. Front office officials have explored options for additional starting pitching and bullpen help as they aim to strengthen their roster for a potential deep run.
Fans at Wrigley Field will soon see Gausman take the mound in a Cubs uniform, bringing experience and a proven repertoire to a staff looking for stability. His ability to work deep into games could ease the load on the rest of the rotation.
Analysts noted that while Gausman’s surface numbers this season appear elevated, underlying metrics suggest the performance has been closer to his established norms. Factors such as batting average on balls in play and strand rates point to some bad luck rather than a significant decline.
