That outing is set to take place at Wrigley Field in Chicago during the second contest of a six-game road trip. The matchup against the Cubs will mark the beginning of Skubal’s tenure with a club chasing another championship run.
Skubal steps into a rotation that already features considerable depth. He is expected to take the turn previously assigned to Eric Lauer. What becomes of Lauer remains unclear as the Aug. 3 trade deadline approaches. The Dodgers could pursue a deal involving the veteran or shift him into a relief role.
The move comes less than a day after the blockbuster deal that sent Skubal from Detroit to Los Angeles. Skubal last took the mound on July 29, so the Aug. 4 date would provide him with a typical five days of rest. Managers and trainers will still monitor his condition closely, and any additional roster moves in the coming hours could alter the plan.
At 29 years old, Skubal has spent his entire major league career with the Tigers until now. The California native now finds himself pitching for a West Coast franchise, a homecoming of sorts even as he adjusts to new teammates and surroundings.
His previous encounter with the Cubs came on June 6, 2025, in Detroit. That afternoon he limited Chicago to one earned run across 7 2/3 innings. Those numbers offer reason for optimism as he prepares to face the same lineup again more than a year later.
Skubal’s most recent appearance produced 6 2/3 innings against the Baltimore Orioles and three earned runs. Overall this season he owns a 7-5 record, a 2.79 earned-run average and a 0.91 WHIP, figures that underscore why the Dodgers pursued him so aggressively.
If the schedule holds, Skubal’s first appearance at Dodger Stadium could arrive during the club’s Aug. 10-16 homestand. A logical candidate for that debut would be the series opener on Aug. 10 against the Kansas City Royals.
The addition strengthens an already formidable starting staff. Even with Lauer pitching effectively for much of the year, the arrival of a pitcher of Skubal’s caliber left little room in the five-man rotation.
Club officials have emphasized that nothing is set in stone until Skubal takes the mound. Health and the final shape of the roster after the deadline will dictate whether Tuesday’s plan remains intact.
